Default $2990 for a 95 Corolla with 115k miles, too much?

This is at a dealership. They told me initially it would be about 3600 out the door which I tried to negotiate down to 2990 out the door, they said they could do 3350 no less. This is going to be my beater. It drives nice, carfax is clean minus one reported accident in 1996.

I wouldn't buy it, my friend got a low mileage 99 Civic recently for $3400.

Meh ok, I thought it was kind of high too but the low mileage and 5 speed were appealing. Funny thing is the sticker on the car said 4900...they tried to tell me how much they lowered the price blah blah and I told them they were absolutely insane if they ever thought they would get 4900 for a 17 year old corolla haha

Might be worth the $2900 if its extra clean and is from the south/out west with ZERO rust. Does everything work on it, a/c, etc? Any service history on it? If its on its original clutch, that is due pretty soon.

The way you can tell if the clutch is on its way out is to put it in 5th gear at 45-50mph, then floor it. Clutch will slip and the revs will shoot up if its going bad.

If it was the AE86 I could understand why, but yeah that seems to be a little high. Like Aron9000 said though if it is super clean could be worth it. Great on gas though!

Ya ac works great and it passéd md inspection so I know tires brakes etc all have 50% + on them and its pretty clean but not perfect, has a couple small dents in the trunk lid but I don't really care about any of that as it would be my winter/beater. Clutch felt good but I didn't try the 5th gear test. I'm sure it's also gonna be due for timing belt change again which is what I tried to use to bargain. I dunno I even pulled the cc out and said 2900 let's close it and they wouldn't budge so it kinda seems like they don't wanna sell it. Car has been there awhile and I think even 2900 is high but don't mind paying a little extra since its obviously at a dealership. I figured they wouldn't let me walk over 400 bucks but whatever lol plenty of corollas out there I suppose

coming from a dealer, not some corner lot dealer, the car is worth it. They have to invest to make sure this car is safe and pass a safety inspection. The car was worth 1300 and possibly more on trade, doesn't mean that is what was offered and they could have put more into the car if the prior owner pushed for top dollar even with it being a 95.

Not knowing what your taxes are my guess if its similar to Chicago I would buy the car. With these older cars your going to pay one way or another. Id take it from a Honda dealer that isnt going any where and is financially backed meaning they will be there tomorrow if you find anything wrong

Taxes here are 6% plus title and tag and a 200 "admin" fee for doing all the tag work. This is really more than I wanted to spend but with the low mileage and pretty good condition I felt like it would be a good beater that I could actually drive other places besides work and not have to worry about it breaking down (work is an 8 mile round trip) I just don't wanna drop 3k plus on it and end up putting a ton into it 6 months down the road :-/

Do you know what the dealer did in service prior to offering it for sale? I would buy it if the car is clean and its up to date on its service. Parts will be cheap for the most part and good thing is being a basic model there isn't too many things that can go wrong. More maintenance then anything else.

Older cars are tough, just purchased two myself, and selling & buying cars at the auction this car could bring all the money. IMO you get what you pay for with older cars. One of the two I got for half of what market value is and I'm doing all the work myself. The other car I paid closer to top dollar for but it had all its service history from day one. This was worth it to me but anything can still go wrong and nothing your going to do can prevent something breaking just from age regardless of how well it was taken care of.
