I hope it is the GS for the sole fact that such an award would make Lexus dump some money into advertising the car, but I am not holding my breath.

I think the Model S is too expensive, personally. If they chose the GL as the SUVOTY and the Model S as the COTY, that would leave some people scratching their heads.

I must be the only person who is puzzled by all of these Avalon predictions. I think the new Avalon is nice, but what about the car is so ground breaking?

I'm holding out for the GS. Now that car is groundbreaking (as is the Model S), because it literally went from zero to hero in its respective segment

The reason is beacause this is the first Toyota to introduce the new design theme at Toyota (Corolla will follow the Avalon) and it pushes a premium upscale design which Toyota has yet to introuce,

Motor Trend has three qualifications to be COTY:

1) Exceptional Value
2) Superiority in Class
3) Most Significant Development

I don't think the Avalon has trumped any of these qualities, no matter how better it is from the previous generation.

The Tesla Model S however...

The first qualification rules out the Tesla S immediately. Its a rich man's toy right now, not even beginning to approach a value proposition.

Well, value is comparative. For example, the Nissan GT-R won the COTY a couple of years ago, costing $90k.

The Chevy Volt is $45k, the Nissan Leaf is $40k, and the electric Rav4 is $50k. Heck, the Fisker Karma is $120k!

To have an electric car of this caliber for $65k (which costs the same as a Lexus GS or Audi A6), and be faster than a BMW M5, well, it does show value compared to other alternative-fuel vehicles.

The trim that is faster than an M5 DOES NOT cost 65K, more like twice that price...

The far future may well be all electric but hybrids are a much more realistic, affordable and practical proposition for the near future.

$85k for the Performance model.

But $49k for the base one.

Well, you can have what you want with the Model S. Cost efficiency in one; *****-out luxury performance with another.

Various trims can make a lot more people happy.

I think it will with the COTY because of what you just said: "the future may be all electric." The Model S may have paved the road to the future far better than the Volt or Leaf.

Its $70k to the 85kw model that supports supercharging, without which Tesla Model S is just a toy.

I am sure Tesla S will win. A lot better than some Ford to win it.
