Default Typical Top gear Disregard for Lexus

I love haw they show their typical disregard for Lexus here. GS400 came out in 97 (During this era). The class is midsize is it not? Then they start comparing 50k cars to cars that cost 70-90k. (E55, M5 XJR and M5). The GS400 smashes every car in that class and at only 50k. Faster than 540 by almost an entire second. Faster than the XJR, and same 0-60 as the E55 but for 20 grand less. Lastly, the E55 didn't even come out until 99-00ish. Fastest sedan on the market at the time. FACT!

JC bashed it until he drove one recently:

So intense was my lack of interest in a Lexus sports car that when the time came to test it on Top Gear, I hid under the sofa and let Richard Hammond do it instead.

It develops 552 brake horsepower, which is about 200bhp less than the current going rate…On paper, then, the LFA looks to be the dinner of a dog. In the flesh, however…

It looks very, very special. And inside it’s even better. It’s the nicest car interior I’ve ever encountered.

I have to say I loved it. It’s an intelligent car, built by intelligent people. In some ways it’s raw and visceral; in others it’s a lesson in common sense.
That's what happens to all LFA critics.

Just saw their new DVD. They dubbed the SC430 the worst car in the history of the world.

Want a cookie for posting that.

They also love the LFA, picked the IS F first in a magazine comparo yadda yadda. So some cars don't resonate (SC 430) and some do (LFA).

If I posted what they thought in the mag most of you would kill yourselves.

At the time this report was aired, Lexus was hardly a major player in Europe. Of course they wouldn't compare a nobody to the established players in the European market. As far as I know the GS400 wasn't even available in Europe. I believe Lexus sold more LS400s here than GSs at the time.

Lastly, who cares what Top Gear says? When I want to know about cars Top Gear is the last source I'll take seriously.

Wasnt the Gs400 more or less for the North American markets? Anywho... the E39 M5 wipes the floor with every car that you mentioned plus the gs400. E39 M5 FTW

Stupid Top Gear. Though I'm not at all surprised at the fact that they bash the "doing the best" vehicles.

The 2nd Gen GS didn't get very favorable press in Europe when it was new if I recall. And, having owned a couple, an M5 is in every single way a better sports sedan than a GS400. And for what it cost it should have been as well.

Lexus was hardly a major player in the UK during this time. They were just getting going. And the GS400 wasn't a "full second faster" than the E39 540i either. Where are you getting your figures from? Those cars would 0-60 in the high-5 to low-6 range, so the GS400 was no better. A full second faster than this is the M5. The GS400 isn't as fast as an M5, sorry. And it probably didn't drive or handle anywhere near as good as the 5er or E-class or Jag either. Hence not even really being in the running. "Smashes every car in the class?" Even today Lexus doesn't do that.
