And for a designo interior , that's easily a $10k+(probably more) option ......

Yes Designo is so nice, you can have it in the S550 too, it is only $10k

Not quite though, you can only get the diamond quilt pattern in the S65. The regular designo interior don't have that.

Designo come stock on the S65 though, what a bargain

In 2014, on car costing $100k, it seems rather cheap to make customer pay for things that $25k cars have these days.

I dont think we should hold different manufacturers to different standards, there is really no reason for anyone to want to justify this. I doubt this is done for weight or performance reasons, so only other reason is $$$.
funny thing is, with the above message, i think it is you who are trying to justify lexus not having this feature. i didn't say it's a good or bad feature, and i never said it's a good idea (read again i said it's a silly option). i was just pointing out that both bmw and mb have it and why. and most importantly, with the key inserted doesn't mean it does not have smart key setup, which was a false assumption you made that i was correcting

spwolf: "It is especially crazy since in pic we have top spec model with leather dash but nope, no smart key."

and if i actually care to give my opinions? i think so far mb has one of the least appealing start button, and lexus has the best one in terms of placement and feel. i have always been glad to see even toyota pushing for start button has options (or standard in some cases). it's a good trend moving forward.

justify what?

all the base, MSRP, total price discussions are largely irrelevant as i bet 90% of new s-class are leased.
someone in the market for an s-class isn't too worried about $1k or $1.3K per month...

Really? I think it looks cool. It is like the last feature to separate the hyper exclusive models.

But I can see how some people would prefer a smooth surface.

Yup, that's how they suck you in.

It is only $10 a day more, it is nothing

I thought they used to have designo packages with some rare colors like reddisn brown leather available as an option even for the S600 and S 65 ?

I think the "base" S65 come with a regular designo interior in the standard color. Then you can have it in other exotic color and trims for extra cost.

They still have that. If you go to the configuration on MB's site, you'll see you can even add stone trim.

I am talking about having to pay extra for smart entry. There is no reason for that to be OK in $100k car.

As to not knowing, does it always look like this, even with smart entry?

As people already mentioned, the start button goes on top of the keyhole.
