Hi here is my situation. I am a college student with $3000 budget to get a commuting car. I prefer Lexus as it is the most reliable brand stated by consumer reports. And now I have two major options. 96 lexus gs 300 with 120k miles and 94 lexus 400 with 100k miles. They are in the similar conditions.
Which one should I choose? GS 300 OR LS 400?
really need your advice
my major consideration is that as gs300 has a V6 which is comparatively smaller its fuel economy is supposed to be better. But meanwhile LS400 has a lower miles and is rated as most reliable...
I also prefer LS400 as two of my friends used to drive that car and they said it runs pretty good, few road/wind noise, comfort interior... but I check it on edmund it says that 94 model is bad with Speed Sensor in the Transmission and failure of the Strut Bar Cushion...Well I aint the auto guy and I dont really know wtf speed sensor and strut bar cushion are...

First off the GS300 is an inline six, not a v6. The 2JZ-GE in the GS300 is a great motor, will run forever if maintained. Its down on power vs the v8 in the LS, and IMO the gas mileage sucks for no more power than it puts out. I average 20mpg and it requires premium fuel in my 2 door SC.
The LS400 is THE car to get IMO. V8 power, similar gas mileage, much bigger inside, and a lot better built. Every time I see a GS of that generation they are beat up and have parts falling off them, the LS cars just hold up a lot better.
Somebody else can chime in on the speed sensor and strut problem. I will say if you do buy an LS400, make sure it doesn't have the air suspension option, very pricey to fix when it does break and doesn't ride any better than the traditional coil springs most of the LS cars came with.

My family had both a 1GS and 2GS at the same time, and I thought they drove about the same. The 1GS was a great car. I was disappointed to learn that my dad had traded it in for peanuts for an RX; I would have bought it just to keep around as an extra car.
Since this is your $3k budget car and you are not mechanically inclined, I would choose the car that has had major maintenance done. Both are great cars and get similar mileage. As a starving college student, your selection should be based on what will cost you the least to keep on the road.

What you save on repairs you setup spend on fuel....get an econo box for commuting. I'm a college student with a 92 ls, and it consumes at minimum one hundred dollars a month in fuel. Financially, it was the biggest mistake I've made.
