Anyone know about the reliability of mazda cars in general, in the last 10 years? particularly the Skyactiv mechanicals and stuff?

For someone looking at a $20k family appliance, the mazda6 looks like a good contender.
It will be the only appliance in its class assembled in japan from mostly japanese parts.
That gets bonus points from me.

I like that raked appearance of the new mazda 6. That longish hood looks good.
Also, compared to the Accord, the 6 trunk space looks more tidy and usable.

I know mazda doesn't sell in USA. But does mazda sell well in japan?

 

The styling to me is the nicest in it's class,built in Japan is a plus but I still would buy the new Accord.

 

Recently bought my daughter a new Mazda CX9 (their big SUV). They had a Subaru Impreza, but with their new baby, it was a bit too small.

We looked at Honda, Toyota, Subaru and others.

Mazda won out for value, fit and finish. Its only down side its a bit thirsty, other than that its an excellent product with a great track record reliability wise. Its only been a few months, but they love it. Never owned Mazda before, didn't know much about them, but if you research you'll find they get some excellent ratings with Consumer Reports and others.

We have a Mazda Miata that has been the most reliable daily my Dad has ever experienced. He has put over 70k on it in the past 5 years, and 2 thing's broke. The Alternator, and the Alternator. The MAP sensor is broken put the miles per gallon went up so my Dad is keeping it broken... It burns tons of oil, being an inline 4, but it is as reliable as Lexus can ever be!!

 

Father currently owns a 2001 Mazda MPV we have a 105,000 miles on it it's been pretty reliable we haven't experienced any serious issues with it for the past 11 years just typical car work.

 

If you are buying new, and going to keep it for 3-5 years, Mazda or the Honda will be alright. If you are a "drive it till the wheels fall off" kinda person, I'd go Honda hands down. Mazda has really stepped their game up in the last few years, but as far as cost of ownership over a 10 year period, Honda is hard to beat. I also think the fit and finish on the Honda is slightly better, as well as quietness and comfort. 15 years ago comparing an Accord to a Mazda 626 was like comparing a Bentley to a wooden soapbox derby car, but they are much more comparable these days.

 

Seems post-2006 Mazda has really improved. But they kind of had to, and they were late. If you look at Honda's offerings then and Mazda's side-by-side, they don't really compare. Mazda, now, are JUST starting to reach the quality and reliability levels that the other japanese brands were reaching 6-7 years ago.

 

Here is some first hand experience with Mazda:

1. I had a '94 Miata and drove it to 70K with no issues.
2. I had a '06 RX-8 and drove it to 65K with no issues.
3. Co-worker owned an Mazda323 and drove it to 200K until it finally died
4. Friend owned a 2006 and drove it to 100K until it need a new AC compressor.
5. Coworker owns '05 Mazda3 with 120K with only issue being a headlight bulb that needs frequent replacement

I would say Mazda has proven to be very reliable in my circles.

 

Two of my coworkers owns mazadaspeed3 and neither of their cars has ever given them problems yet, and they drive their cars pretty hard. They are both into modding.

Besides that, I haven't any contact with any of the new mazdas. I know a ton of people with first and second gen miatas, but they aren't comparable to the new mazda 6.

 

The new Mazda 6 looks like the new 3 series in side profile. And that's a compliment. Looks bigger and roomier than a 3 series though.

Wonder how its handling will stack up to a 3 series.

 

Rust issues galore...

 

I have a Mazda3 Sport that will be two years old next month. In that time, no warranty or TSIB work, just routine maintenance. The car is a pleasure to drive around the city/suburban area. For this kind of use, we prefer it over the Lexus (2) that we've owned. Road trips are another story.

I don't keep cars too long but would consider another Mazda for our daily driver, maybe the CX-5 when it gets the 2.5 engine.

 

I'm a big Mazda fan. The resemblance of the Shinari and Takeri concepts in the new Mazda6 makes for a stunning road fairing car

 

Skyactive engines in new 6 are brand new... as to the sales, Mazda sells a bit more than Mitsubishi worldwide. II think one of their biggest markets is Australia.

 

Other than the RX cars they seem to be pretty reliable.
