Default News: European Union wants car makers to reduce noise levels

European Union wants car makers to reduce noise levels

Cut by half before 2020

The European Union wants to adopt a new set of regulations to lower car noise levels.
These aren't the first regulations regarding permissible noise levels we've heard of, but members of the green, liberal and socialist factions part of EU's Environment Committee want to take things to a new level. The new legislation says car makers will have to lower noise emissions by half within the next seven years.
The legislation was approved by a margin of just one vote, and it doesn't include any sort of exceptions for high-performance vehicles. Speaking of sports cars, Judith Merkies who's a Dutch EU member from the Labour Party said these vehicles are the worst polluters.
For this stricter final version of the legislation to be adopted, it will have to be voted by the EU and Council in March 2013. Even if it will be approved, implementation will take a while especially nowadays when the European automotive industry is going through some difficult times.
If they really want to do this, maybe they should start with motorcycles which are generally a lot louder than cars.

Many parts of the EU are undergoing hard economic problems..........and yet there are some douchebag politicians over at Brussels who even want to suggest this kind of stupidity.

I think these douchebag EU government politicians were brainwashed by the extremist mentality of those Greenpeace eco-terrorists.

I agree that government-dictates aren't the best way to do it, but, as far as I'm concerned, the quieter a car is, the better. I didn't choose a Buick Verano as my own daily-driver for nothing.....its library-quiet cabin was one of the main reasons. And our own forum here, Club Lexus, is named after an auto-nameplate that got its start (and much of its success) by also building silent-running cars.

Good point.

However, I do not like what some of those government idiots in Brussels are proposing. Seriously, it's as if they have some kind of grudge against internal-combustion engines

Haha they will probably go as far as to "FORCE" all EU citizens to either ride a bicycle, walk or take public transportation.....................which I personally don't mind myself. In Europe for instance, they have some nice train services

BUT WHAT ABOUT THE REST?

IMHO:
Mode of transportation should be an option and part of freedom of choice, not something that is forced upon by a government or an institution.

Haven't they aready, to an extent, done that in downtown London? Those who are allowed in often have to pay an additional tax.

Yeah the London Congestion Charge.

Apparently, during a state visit by Obama, he was actually fined 120 British Pounds because the Presidential State car didn't pay any toll when Obama went to visit Buckingham Palace.

I'm for the new reg only because it will allow Lexus to sell more hybrids in Europe (and that there's no noise-making LFA to be made anymore anyway).

They're just scapegoating the cars again, what they really need to do is to pass a law to have mufflers installed on politicians mouths. The amount of crap and poisons that come out of them is deadly.

Seems odd that they would ticket a visiting Head-of-State, and, even if they did, the Queen herself would probably waive the fine.

Well, either way, a quieter-running car usually means a quieter cabin as well. But it also has to be remembered that those who are blind or vision-impared often depend on at least some car-noise to tell whan it is safe to walk. This, of course, has been a problem with some hybrids and pure-electrics....the electric motor is just too quiet for some pedestrains, and some manufacturers are actually trying to compensate for it for safety reasons.

My only beef is no exceptions for performance vehicles, gd luck dropping the noise levels for exotics in half.

The retardism doesn't stop there. Who knows what kind of idiocy those politicians in Brussels would come up. What's next? A tax on breathing?

^^^Agreed.

The point here is that regulation has its positive points. The PROBLEM here though is excessive regulation that encroaches into borderline stupidity

Unfortunately, I wonder if the EU automakers have enough power to fight back against these kinds of retarded regulations proposed by the EU central government.

Really? They haven't made a car that's too noisy in years. Hell, my LS is 20 years old and I can barely hear the thing.
