Default Toyota tops U.S. in recalls with 5.3M

Doesn't seem to hurt sales,though.

Washington — Toyota Motor Corp. recalled more vehicles — 5.3 million — than any other automaker in the U.S. in 2012.

It must be remembered, though, that recalls are not necessarily a measure of a company's present quality-control or engineering status. Many recalls involve vehicles that were built a number of years ago....they are not limited to just new (or nearly new) vehicles.

I would think that Honda would be top for the number of recalls, and I also thought that GM and Chrysler would be higher.

Recalls are done to fix a component so if that component is shared amongst many different models of vehicles, the total number of vehicles recalled will be high, even if the number of recall campaigns remains relatively low.

Toyota is a master at sharing components amongst car models so each different recall campaign will likely affect quite a few different models; and if the Camry or Corolla is one of those affected models, the total number is likely to be high because of how well the Camry and Corolla sell.

People are going to look at the numbers and freak out when in reality it's not as bad as it seems. Toyota voluntary recalled more vehicles for their customers. Similar to how they did the floor mat recall simply because it was all user error they decided to make it more idiot proof. Honestly it's the customers that should be embarrassed.

On a separate note, I'm willing to bet Hyundai/Kia will be high up on the list within 2 years. Their fluff will catch up to them soon.

If people were freaking out, Toyota wouldn't be the largest car producer in the world. Nor would they have lead the % increase over 2011 of auto company sales in the U.S.

Wow, Toyota and Honda, who are almost unanimously considered the two most reliable car makes in the world, lead the recall count by far.

I'm not sure what exactly to make of that, but it's very interesting.

EDIT: The link doesn't seem to be working... And I have to wonder just a little bit if a news publication called "Detroit News" might have some biased sources.

This news doesn't really bother me either way, though. Again, it's just interesting.

recalls also show how committed a maker is to fixing problems and keeping customers happy (and yes, keeping the lawyers off their backs).

after some bad press and also self-inflicted problems, toyota went on the offensive, bending over backwards to fix even the smallest of potential issues.

i'd rather have a toyota that had 5 recalls, that a chrysler that didn't have any.
