Details:
Picked automatic premium plus engine option. ($42,600!!! ALREADY?)
Added metallic paint ($475), nav ($3,050), sports package ($750), and B&O ($850). That's it. That brought me to $48,620.

Those of you quoting $42k are obviously OKAY with barebones car and that's fine. But don't say that 50k pricings are nonsense when optioning out with simple things brings the total there easily. It is a fact that German's pricings on their models easily skyrocket just optioning a few things.
BMW does the same. Even more frustrating is if you are trying to look for a car with the specs you want in a dealer's inventory. When you have so many different possible packages, makes it near impossible to find what you want without over paying for unwanted options.
I think Mercedes does a better job of this. Their P1 package usually comes with all the usual luxury features IMO.

I agree it comes down to personal preference though. If I were to get an A5, I'd skip the packages and spend the money to upgrade to S5 premium plus with manual ($50,900 base MSRP, edmunds TMV showing ~$49k). Comes with xenon lights, memory seats, heated seats. good enough for me.

Which answers the original question:

Q: Why would anyone buy an A5 for 50k?

A: They wouldn't. For 50k they'd get an S5.

About that comment earlier about money being devalued, yeah, definitely true. At the Worcester car show in Worcester MA all the 2013 in 2014 cars showcased. Everything is expensive as heck. A sentra is a $20,000 car, did we ever think we would see the day?

True, leasing, to a large extent, does keep luxury/premium-car dealerships in buisness. But leasing is not for everyone......it has strict annual-mileage and wear-and-tear clauses, which (can) cost money if you violate them.

it is not particulary worse or better than before.. inflation at this rate is good for the industry.

Would you pay 50k for a really nice looking Acura with a civic SI engine.
Good looks and status, that's what most people care anyway.

speaking of Audi A5s. I dusted one in my LS in a little onramp drag race this morning on the way to work. That 2.0 L turbo did a lot better than I thought but it was no match for the LS

i think it is pretty silly to discuss preferences of customers.... if people are buying it, then obviously people like it and so who am I to tell them what they should or shouldnt like? Its obviously great option!

The question is why they like it? Not if they should like it.

All discussions in this entire world is about the difference of personal preferences.

Yeah those VAG 2.0L turbo is surprising quick off the line for only having 200 hp, that tiny turbo spool really fast. But they run out of stream quickly.

CDNROCKIES...smooth 7 in your sig....I had a mineral white 750li X-Drive with the same setup (black rims) that I got rid of last year.

I don't think A5's are worth 50k...but I don't think a 550i is worth $83k, either (you can option them that high). I went with my friend a few months ago when he bought his A5....and I helped him negotiate the final price....which was around $42k...and I could not believe the car didn't have navigation standard for that price.

Audi is sort of the "it" brand now.....but people became attracted to their newer models because of the stupid LED lights that everyone does now. I think the A5 is actually one of the better models in their lineup....the A4 and A6 are boring....the A7 is great or hideously ugly depending on who you talk to...and the A8....well...it's just a big A4 or A6....and you won't know which it is if you were behind one.

Cars are depreciating like a MF'er it seems like right now because they are updating the things every 3 years with major updates. They weren't doing this 10 years ago....the upgrades were minor. It's one thing to pay $50k for a car that will be practically new looking for 5 years...it's another to pay $50k for one that will look new for 3 years.
