Audi!!! Why would anyone buy an A5 for 50k?
Why would anyone pay 50k for 2.0T A5 with only 210hp. I'm not going to lie. It does look really good but is it enough for pay 50k for it. What a rip off.
Would you pay 50k for a really nice looking Acura with a civic SI engine.

Consumers put value on a lot of things. $5k for a watch here, $300 for basketball shoes there, and $50k for premium cars.
Audi has its virtues: technology (especially 4G integration), driving dynamics, design, brand name value, etc.
Honestly, between an A5 cabriolet or an IS250 convertible, I'd choose the A5. Both cost $50k and have ~200 hp.

A A5 convertible with 210hp can hit over 60k....the facts are that not everyone values having a high HP car. Also to Audi's credit it is a strong 210hp and it has I think over 250lbs of torque and the engine can be modified.
As for Acura, people don't pay 50k for any of them so it doesn't matter what engine they offer.

Have you driven one? The 2.0T has been fairly universally praised as a great, balanced engine. Yes the 210 hp seems a bit short on paper, but the torque and its curve have proven to be strong enough for people to consider, especially with the way it conserves fuel.
I don't think you can quite compare it to Acura, as I think the market has spoken that no one wants to pay $50K for any Acura, other than maybe the high end MDX's.

If you want a shocker, I was stunned to find out the C250 is actually a 1.8 liter I-4 turbo with 201hp... The one I was looking at was 48k with options, sport, red leather yadda yadda...
Entry Level Prices are no longer capped at 40k, they are 50-55k cars now with options!

Same as why anyone would pay 114,000 for an audi r8, versus the lexus isf which is less than half the price, prestige.
Audi r8 base: 114,000
317 torque
420 hp
0-60: 4.4sec

Lexus ISF: 61,000
371 torque

The Audi A5 looks sexy as hell, and at 3600-3700 lbs it's hitting 0-60 in the low-6s range with AWD weighing it down. Does that sound like a measly 210hp to you? For comparison the BMW E92 328xi coupe with 230hp/200tq does 0-60 in the high-6 range, slower. And the BMW F30 328xi sedan with 240hp/260tq is only a few tenths faster, with all being about the same weight.
The Honda Civic Si is hundreds of pounds lighter, has only FWD, and is still a lot slower than this Audi. The A5 Cab 2.0T weighs in at a porky 4000 lbs just like my E93, and still manages to hit 60 mph in the high-6s range with "only" 211hp. That's pretty impressive, dontcha think?
(Hint: it's really making a lot more than 211hp)

I think some of the point here is Audi is a big time aspirational brand and Lexus is paying attention to it.
I just completed a lexus advisory board survey on anniversary models (so be on the look out for a 25th anniversary model or two cobranded with Coach or Tumi) and the survey was loaded with perception questions about Audi.

^^^ I can believe that. Audi can't do any wrong now, they are hip and the "it" brand. They are constantly brought up in conversations and as you said very aspirational now.
Contrarily the op brought up Acura and the new RLX has 310hp for 50k base and its going to fail harder than the falcons in the playoffs

In this class 211 hp doesn't sound like much though. Maybe they need to boost the hp rating for image purposes.
