Ram 1500 to get V6 diesel engine later this year

Happy Valentine's Day, diesel lovers! Chrysler announced today that the Ram 1500 will offer a light-duty diesel engine when it goes into production this fall. Using the same turbocharged 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 recently introduced in the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee, the Ram 1500 is expected to get even better fuel economy than the current 2013 model's best-in-class 25 miles per gallon on the highway.

Power output has not been released for the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel, but in the Grand Cherokee, this engine produces 240 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque, and it will be paired with Chrysler's eight-speed automatic transmission. This has definitely been a busy and exciting year for the Ram division, bringing home major awards such as the 2013 North American Truck of the Year, 2013 Motor Trend Truck of the Year and 2013 Truck of Texas not to mention the recent announcement that the Ram HD models will offer a best-in-class towing capacity of 30,000 pounds.

I wonder over time wha the tunability and reliability of this engine will be. Glad to finally see one of the big three step up, I had hoped it would be Ford. With a tune I wonder if 300/500+ and 30mpg is doable and yet still reliable?

Wont be feasible if the EPA has any say.

...why? The engine is already coming in the Grand Cherokee.

EDIT: Sorry, I see that you were talking about the modding part. Yeah the EPA can't say anything, people modding their diesel trucks to blow out tons of soot and put down ridiculous power.

Good thing in the end they really don't. If they did we would not have the ability to mod any of our cars

My question is more about the engine itself, a quick internet search and I was not able to find out much about the internal workings and design of the Chrysler 3.0 Diesel. If it is design limited to only the stock numbers I would stick with a gas burner, but if it has potential for modding while maintaining durability then Dodge has just moved up the ladder in my search for a replacement truck. Hope Ford takes notice and looks to drop a Diesel in the upcoming F150 redesign.

this engine is a carryover from the euro market, its been used in libertys and cherokees there for years now. this one is updated with common rail electronic fuel injection and other goodies but its basically the same. i imagine 30mpg hwy will be attainable.

They're coming down very hard on the diesel performance industry right now. Very hard.

One of the biggest tuners for diesel pickups, H&S, is located here in St. George, and they were just strong-armed by the EPA to stop producing DPF delete kits. The DPF is a terrible invention that robs mileage. Removing it on the 08-10 Powerstrokes resulted in significant MPG gains.

Several other companies have been targeted.
