Default BMW leaks X4 concept

Ahead of its debut in a few weeks time in China, the first photos of the baby X6 have surfaced.

Based on the BMW X3 platform the X4 Concept aims to capitalize on the demand for coupe-styled crossovers, a segment BMW created with the controversial (though surprisingly well received) X6.

While technically a concept, it’s really just a thinly veiled version of the production car with some added accents and larger wheels. When it does arrive, expect a selection of engines including a 240 hp turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cyliner as well as a turbo inline-six making 300 hp.

Don’t be surprised to eventually see an M model either.

Look for the X4 Concept to make its official debut at the Auto China show in Shanghai on April 21st..

I liked it better when it was called the 3-series GT.

I like this better than the 3-series GT. The X4 being jacked up suits the weird looks better, imo. I still think the 3GT will have the lowest sales of all the variants.

Honda can only wish they had a designer like that.

I think the x4 looks better, but that is just because it is newer.

I dont like the concept of having an x4 in their lineup though. Kinda takes away the spotlight/specialness of the x6. Mini dilution if you will. Same thoughts on CLA vs. CLS.

But i guess that is the German business plan, create/find as many holes as possible and fill them in.

Developing automotive platforms has become very expensive, so many luxury car brands have been finding ways to share them amongst multiple models. Lexus can easily share platforms with various Toyota models and amongst each other (LC200/LX570, Camry/Avalon/ES, Highlander/RX, GS/IS, etc.). The only remaining Lexus model that is possibly bespoke is the XF40 LS. VAG does the same thing as TMC with Audi.

Mercedes-Benz is becoming similar to BMW, since there no more Chrysler models to share platforms or parts with, thus the numerous models based on one platform(A, CLA, GLA). BMW can't do that outside of the Ghost and 7er F02, so the end result is numerous models within the same brand and soon to be MINI with the next X1 and 2016 1-Series.

Is this really supposed to be a baby X6? Maybe it's because I don't keep up with the brand as much, but BMW model nomenclature sure seems confusing recently.

Has the X6 been selling enough to warrant this? Same thing with 5GT and 3GT. Probably the least appealing BMW designs for me.

I'd probably call it a teenage X6, not small enough to be a baby. I think the baby X6 shall be rechristened the X2 when it is the X6 mating season again in 2020.

It probably hasnt, but filling in "holes" seems to be the trend lately. The 3GT looks better than the 5GT.
