The S65 AMG was always the most expensive. They get that expensive with every last option (including matte paint) and then suffer hilarious depreciation. Perhaps it'll be more worth it once the new V12 arrives with the facelift...the current V12's basic design is about to crest 20 years old!

MB is working on Next GEN right now therefore its 2 generations behind.

huh? If ls is one behind now and they both come out with new gens around 2019 then ls is still one behind, not two.

but then again, anything that breaks in that v12 is always an arm and a leg
yup, kind of funny how the hype on 7 went so high and now the car is dead quiet. i don't even see that many of them on the road, whereas i see new s class left and right (new as in no plates yet)

The new V12 is absolutely coming here. Whether it will make a sophomore appearance on the next-gen S-class headed here is a good question, but I hope they make it work somehow.

It takes YEARS to develop a car especially one like Sclass or LS!

Fun thread. S Class is my favorite car, of course. I was on my way home late tonight around 10ish, on an empty back road and a black 97-99 S320 or 420 pulled right up on a side street to pull out. (I know not 500 or 600 bc it didn't have xenons lol) I just love that big body to begin with but especially the last years of the W140 they just aced, A+++ in looks IMO. Ditto the R129 SL. Even now, just commands respect. It was interesting because you rarely see those around here anymore, and not alot of flagship luxury cars here. 80-100k SUVs are all over the place here but the high end sedans, not so much. I miss living in LA sometimes because S-class cars were freaking EVERYWHERE.
Anyway, I remember reading an article in a magazine YEARS ago....I'm speculating, but this was probably 2010. Said magazine (I can't remember which) predicted that, as of then, two generations ahead (so, the successor to the current W222) would be under four cylinder power. This was absolutely a legitimate source, perhaps C&D, and I remember thinking to myself "really?"
Since we were talking about downsizing, etc., it just reminded me. As of 2016 I can't see a four cylinder S-Class in the USA, but then again I have zero idea what the next one will be like. The current W222 is still relatively fresh.
Then again, the new E300 with its I-4 is standard here (I wouldn't even consider it soley bc of that motor) so maybe it's not a stretch.

Your years are off. One generation behind. Half a generation really. In order for it to be two full generations behind the LS430 would still need to be the one being sold.
Both the W221 S Class and the LS460 came out in 2006 as 2007 models. At this time they were current, the LS was not behind. Can we agree there?
In 2012 the LS was extensively refreshed as a 2013 model. In 2013 the W222 S Class came out as a 2014 and the LS became 1 generation behind.
In 2017 the all new LS comes out and the refreshed S comes out.
So how do you say the LS is two generations behind?

Mercedes Putting The Final Touches On Facelifted S-Class & S63 AMG
The facelifted Mercedes S-Class was spotted during development testing in Southern Europe, along with its go-faster silbing, the mighty S63 AMG.
The German luxury flagship is set to receive a range of updates, including some of the advanced tech features that debuted in the E-Class. Things like touch-sensitive controls, a new three-spoke steering wheels and a new set of digital displays are already a given, thanks to our skilled spies’ previous efforts.
Being one of the most impressive features of the current model, the updated S-Class will host a pair of two new high-resolution screens with no buttons in between them, making them look more unified and elegant. The infotainment system will be controlled by the new touchpad **** on the center console.
The exterior will be touched up with new lighting signatures all around and a redesigned set of bumpers mainly. Overall the shape of the S-Class will remain as is, as Mercedes don’t want to mess with what is already considered a very successful design approach.
The engine range is also going to be updated in order to offer cleaner emissions and probably even more power. There is a report going around that says Mercedes is going to debut their new straight-six petrol engines in the facelifted S-Class, paired to a 48V mild hybrid system. That could explain the extensive development testing we saw during the previous months, but so far we can only speculate on the matter.
With that said, Mercedes is expected to show the world the new S-Class and its faster derivative at a major auto show soon, if not in Paris, at one of the upcoming events, so we won’t have to wait too long to found out what’s really going on.

Those are the base headlights that aren't even offered on U.S. models. The facelifted model that's coming here will have a revised version of the current adaptive LED system that comes standard...the main LED signature will have triple stripes and will be more or less in the same location. See below:
