Agreed. That looks about as bad as the 1st-gen GS450h. Most people who buy family sedans do care about practicality, and failing to deliver that will mean poor sales, as Toyota/Lexus surely have learned already.

yep, i skipped 2007 GS450h only because of the trunk.. my buddy put A4 sheet of paper in it and took a pic, and looked half full! :-)

actually ydooby, the trunk hinges on the first pic you posted dont look bad, its just the strut design. That wait, it doesnt intrude into the cargo space.
