Default Ford bringing production F-150 to Detroit with Atlas styling and Alcoa blast shields

Ford bringing production F-150 to Detroit with Atlas styling and Alcoa blast shields

According to a report in Bloomberg, the 2015 Ford F-150 will indeed be showing up at the Detroit Auto Show next month. It will bring attitude with it, not only in the form of sheetmetal inspired by the Atlas concept (pictured) that appeared at the 2013 Detroit show but also in the Alcoa military blast shields among the display being used to showcase the ruggedness of aluminum.

There's been a lot of talk about the F-150 switching to aluminum body panels (although maintaining a steel frame), and for good reason. The lightweight body is expected to shed more than 700 pounds and greatly increase its highway mileage, but production-line issues and possible delays have been a major focus of attention concerning the best-selling vehicle in America for 32 years, meaning Ford has to get it right. F-150 is responsible for a massive portion of the company's global profits and it will come in a year when company profits are already predicted to decline because of new car launches.

When it comes to dings, the Bloomberg story says Ford wants Alcoa to supply some of the military-grade aluminum it uses for blast shields on battlefield vehicles to help it talk up the toughness of aluminum.

God I love that Atlas concept. I'm a little sad it's been delayed but, we all know there's going to a gazillion of them on the road once dealers get them.

Default Rumormill: 2015 Ford F-150 To Get Small Displacement EcoBoost V6

2015 Ford F-150 To Get Small Displacement EcoBoost V6

In addition to wide use of aluminum, rumours have it a 2.7L EcoBoost V6 could be introduced in new F-150 pickup
Chevrolet, GMC and Ram pickups are currently stealing the show when it comes to awards and accolades amongst the automotive press and public. But Ford, arguably the truck leader (depending on how you count the numbers), isn’t resting on its laurels.

The new 2015 F-150, set to debut in Detroit next month, will get a host of upgrades. In addition to the usage of aluminum, expected to reduce weight some 700 lbs, Ford may bring a new engine to the party.

Dubbed “Nano”, the motor is rumoured to measure 2.7L in displacement, feature six cylinders, and be turbocharged. However, unlike the twin turbocharging of the 3.5L V6 EcoBoost, the new “Nano” motor is said to have asymmetrical turbos, delivering fuel efficiency and power. Output is expected to be around 320 hp and 370 lb-ft of torque.

The new engine, if it is introduced, would slot directly above the current base 3.7L V6.

I don't know what to save my pennies for...this or the new Mustang(it'll be a while though, still need to get my Master's degree).

I really like the concept. I hope Ford doesn't changes it too much.

I fear what will be sold will be a very much softened and more vanilla version of the concept, as is the case in most concept vs production vehicles. The real deal will not look much like the concept, or at least much less agressive. In my mind the concept is more what the next Raptor would look like.
