Personally I love the old GMT 400 trucks of the 90's. Its what I grew up with, Bob Segar provided the track for what IMO was one of the best ad campaigns ever.
Stock or modified, these trucks just looked all business IMO, the basic, clean lines are timeless.
Even in basic work truck trim they looked cool:
Or in cowboy Cadillac dually trim they were a looker:
They really seemed to lose the style thing with the GMT 800, all the details are way too fussy, these trucks have a lot of cheap black plastic crap trim on them, and they just look too rounded off, like somebody took the aggresion out of the truck:
Even lifted with nice wheels they just don't have that same sort of "SOLID" look like the 90's trucks . . .
Then came the horrible front end redesign for 2004, the straight lines and headlights just clash with the curvy lines found elsewhere on the truck. IMO this is the ugliest truck Chevy ever made by a long margin. The bad thing is if you want a GMT 800 truck with the duramax diesel, you are pretty much stuck with this stupid design, as 2002 models were the old GMT 400, the 2003 GMT 800 were a one year design that looked like the 99-03 half ton models, 2004-06 heavy duty models had that same ugly "cat eyes" front grill/light treatment.
2007-2013 GMT 900 trucks aren't much better. They are kind of generically styled with WAY WAY WAY too much fender gap. I'm talking about that space between the fender and the top of the tire. Heavy duty 4x4 models were especially bad about this.
The crew cab models are just as guilty, but perhaps the shorter bed/bigger cab makes it less obvious. Maybe GM improved this over the years as well
2007 Crew Cab 1/2 ton
2007 Crew cab dually 1 ton:
2013 Crew cab 1/2 ton
2012 Crew Cab dually 1 ton, this was the 2nd year for the completely revamped chassis, brakes, suspension, and a significant redesign of the duramax diesel. Its a pretty damn awesome truck, as GM spent all its money updating the mechanicals, the cosmetics/interior stayed the same. That being said, IMO its still ugly and has a goofy *** stance compared to a Ford or Dodge truck.
Then we have a new generation of ugly, the 2014 Silverado . . .
Looks like they finally recieved the message about the wheel gap and proper stance. Still that's only a face a mother could love.
The GMC version looks a lot better, but I still think the LED/projector headlights look a bit like a Terminator, ie gimmicky.

Don't forget, though, that, regardless of what one thinks of the exterior styling, most people would agree that GM truck interiors are now light-years ahead of what they were 10-15 years ago. Some of those old pre-2006/2007 GM truck/SUV interiors, to me at least, had about the same level of looks as a Jeep CJ.

Although the GMT800 in proper configuration doesn't look bad. If I bought a half-ton pickup, odds are it would be a late 90's-early 2000's chevy with the 5.3.
Right now my work has me driving a brand new 2013 Suburban with the 5.3(Thank heavens too...the AC in my car is dead and we're plus 110 here). It looks nice and goes like a bat out of hell.
