Default Spy Shots: Next-gen Chevrolet Cruze

Chevy delays next Cruze until 2015

The Chevrolet Cruze has proven to be a popular global car for General Motors. So popular, in fact, that the General is in no rush to replace the compact and is using the opportunity to build more engineering changes into the car's design. Originally, we were expecting the next-gen Cruze to debut late next year for the 2015 model year, but according to Reuters, Chevrolet has pushed this timetable back by about a year. With the new Cruze now set to go on sale in December of 2015, it will likely carry a 2016 model year designation.

Other than riding on GM's new D2XX platform, we have had little intel about the next-gen Cruze, so we have no clue what changes are being made to the car. What does seem evident is that Chevy is looking to prevent the Cruze launch from suffering the same kind of flop as the 2013 Malibu, which required emergency updates just one year after its launch. As the article points out, the Cruze has helped spur GM's post-bankruptcy turnaround, and by the 2014 model year, it will be the oldest car in its US portfolio.

Crazy how fast time flies by.

Feels like only yesterday that GM, Ford, and Chrysler were falling in a bottomless pit. Chrylser was bought out, and the Cruze was lauded as the great compact car that will help turn Chevy around (which it did! ). But that was back during the 2008 recession.

What a good job, the Cruze did. This new one looks more nose-heavy. But should still do pretty well.

Yeah, it seems like the Cruze just recently came out, yet we know it's been around a while.

The Cruze is selling big right now, so there really is no rush for the new one.

This is the same philosophy reported a few months ago regrading the current Corolla. Why bother if it keeps selling

True, but IMO the Cruze is a much better built and way more technically advanced car than the Corolla. Never thought I'd be saying that in a million years, that I'd much rather own a compact Chevy than a Toyota.

I hope they don't mess up the look cause the current Cruze looks great! Sometimes I wonder if I'd of been happier buying a base model Cruze over my Yaris. However, I do love averaging 34-35mpg with my Yaris without even trying though.

Yes, both the Cruze and Verano are both nice looking small cars. Let's hope GM keeps them current while keeping their styling cues. According to the CR Owners Survey, it seems like some more work is needed in the area of Reliability.

With a new Cruze comes a new Volt. Assuming GM continues to use the Cruze as its basis. We'll see what direction GM takes with the new Volt in order to boost sales. They need to figure out how to build one for $30K otherwise the Volt isn't worth production because the sales will never materialize with a $40K price point.

I liked the Cruze we had as a rental in Hawaii. It was on my short-list of cars while I was looking this last month, but I dropped it off when I decided to go with a mid-size sedan rather than a compact.

I know, that's becoming a rarity now days.

Do wish GM would build some sort exciting turbocharged Cruze SS. The previous turbocharged Cobalt SS was a rocket and had a really well tuned chassis.

Test car's shape looks very promising. Would like to see less chrome inside though.
