1934 Packard convertible takes Best In Show at Pebble Beach

Hard decisions have been made, score sheets have been tallied and a new car now reigns over the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. The 2013 Best In Show winner here at Pebble is the 1934 Packard 1108 Twelve Dietrich Convertible Victoria owned by Joseph and Margie Cassini of West Orange, NJ. We'll give you a second to memorize that name.

The vehicle that beat out a huge field of worthy competitors is special indeed, despite being relatively unknown outside of the concours set. A giant open touring car – typical of the American metal of this social strata and era – the very scale of Packard is massive by modern standards. Well-known coachbuilder Dietrich stretched elegant flowing fenders, closed in the rear, to encompass the Packard's 140-plus-inch wheelbase. Powered by a pristine, L-head V12 engine, probably pushing something in the neighborhood of 150 horsepower, the pre-war coupe is more of a stroller than a sprinter. But the judges aren't bound to take performance into consideration when it comes to the utterly patrician field of competitors.

A similar 1934 Packard Victoria Convertible by Dietrich received a high bid of $2.2 million at an RM Auction in Amelia Island last year, but it seems as though the car went unsold. Chances are good that this very rare breed of Packard is due a slight bump in value after today.

Congratulations to The Cassinis, to the officials at Pebble Beach and to all the attendees lucky enough to catch a glimpse of yet another champion automobile.

Default Pebble Beach Concept Car Lawn boasts an embarrassment of riches

Pebble Beach Concept Car Lawn boasts an embarrassment of riches

http://www.autoblog.com/photos/pebbl...#photo-845135/

The Concept Lawn at Pebble Beach has again improved the phrase, "a gathering of exotics." Even if we've seen most of them before in other places, where else in the world would you see them not just in one place, but right next to one another in a space about as big as a suburban back yard?

Although its design prominently displays a number of its supercar inspirations, the Icona Vulcano puts them together so well that few would complain. It didn't swim alone in the deep end of the exotic pool, joined by the Aston Martin CC100 and Lamborghini Veneno concepts, and the absurdly absurd Laraki Motors Epitome.

Slightly closer to Earth hovered the DB9 Spyder Zagato Centennial, BMW Pininfarina Gran Lusso Coupe, Jaguar Project 7, Superleggera Disco Volante Touring, Galpin Ford coachbuilt GTR1, the and the Hyundai HCD-14 Genesis concept. Projects that were signposts to production cars included the Acura NSX, Lincoln MKC and Mercedes-Benz GLA concepts, and out back behind The Lodge, a Porsche 918 Sypder with its roof on.

The road-car ranks were no less Spyker B6 Venator Spyder concept, a concept in name only, the Aston Martin Vanquish Volante, an SRT Viper GTS refusing to be intimidated, the Rolls-Royce Wraith, a 1963 Lamborghini 350 GTV, Saleen George Follmer Edition Mustang and a Bentley Mulsanne Le Mans Limited Edition parked next to one of its forebears, a Bentley 4-1/2-Litre Supercharged.

Incredibly, the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse Legend edition dedicated to Jean-Pierre Wimille didn't make the party.

Default Porsche 918 Spyder pre-production version in all its almost-done glory

Porsche 918 Spyder pre-production version in all its almost-done glory

Porsche continues the long tease of its upcoming 918 Spyder; the latest instantiation here at the Pebble Beach Concours with the car presented in pre-production form to the throngs on the golf course.

Just a few days ago Porsche dropped an image of the car on its official Twitter feed. True to that leak, this 918 looks damn near what we expect the full customer version to be when it is officially debuted in Frankfurt. The neon-green brake calipers are items new to this version of the 918, and seem to be an identical color to those found on the Panamera S E-Hybrid.

When it shows up as a drivable piece, expect the Porsche supercar, with its gasoline-electric drivetrain, to be pretty insane. Horsepower in excess of 800 ponies will be available with a toe-tap, while the price of entry is expected to come within shouting distance of $850,000. A good deal for Porsche to bring the thing to Pebble then, where buyers with that kind of cash are think on the ground (and most likely wearing sherbet-colored trousers).

Lamborghini to Display its First-Ever Prototype Alongside Latest During Pebble Beach Automotive Week

50th Anniversary Celebrations Continue with Rare Stateside 1963 350 GTV Appearance and 2013 Veneno North American Debut

HERNDON, Va. (August 13, 2013) –– In celebration of its 50th Anniversary, Lamborghini will host the North American debut of its 'one-off' Veneno show car and a rare display of its first-ever prototype, the 1963 350 GTV, for enthusiasts next week during the annual Pebble Beach Automotive Week.

"Lamborghini's presence at Pebble Beach will be the pinnacle of the brand's 50th anniversary celebrations in North America," said Stephan Winkelmann, President and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A. "We're celebrating 100 years of innovation in half the time – what better way than by showing the first Lamborghini ever built alongside our latest racing prototype and road-going super sports car - the Veneno."

The North American unveiling of its $4 Million, 750-horsepower Veneno will take place at The Quail: A Motorsports Gathering on Friday, August 16. The Veneno will then join the 350 GTV, which made its world debut at the Turin Motor Show in 1963, in an exclusive display at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance on Sunday, August 18. Winkelmann will serve as an honorary judge at the Pebble Beach event. Later this year, three Veneno production cars will be delivered to clients around the world.

Lamborghini will host a display and exclusive executive retrospective presentation on Friday, August 16 at Concorso Italiano. The public will then be able to see a selection of the cars in-person during a Concorso Italiano-hosted parade through downtown Monterey and historic Cannery Row on Saturday morning, August 17.
Anniversary celebrations have taken place throughout North America and Europe this year, including the 350-vehicle Lamborghini Grande Giro, the largest-ever Lamborghini driving event, which stormed Italy in May.

Bentley Mulsanne Le Mans Limited Edition celebrates in patrician hues

Gallery:
http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bentl...#photo-845106/

Bentley has made good on its promise to show off its Mulsanne Le Mans Limited Edition here at Pebble Beach, and the good news is that the thing is a far less aggressively green than we'd been led to believe. In fact, the verdant Mulsanne looks downright proper when parked with Bentley historics as context.

The Limited Edition car is meant to celebrate both the 90th Anniversary of Le Mans itself, as well as ten years since Bentley took home the hardware with its Speed 8 racer. By "celebrate" we of course mean that this Mulsanne gets diamond quilted leather all over its lavish cabin, has sportier than normal steering and suspension tuning and is likely to offer a meaty exhaust growl via its "Quad Effect" tailpipe ends. A set of dark-finish wheels really pull the look together.

Default Seven-figure cars highlight day one of RM's Monterey auction

Seven-figure cars highlight day one of RM's Monterey auction

RM Auctions is one of several houses holding auctions during the Monterey weekend, and Friday night's festivities got quite pricey. Seven-figure vehicles were not at all uncommon during the first day of the two-day event, with the 1953 Ferrari 375 MM Spider, seen above, crossing the block for $9,075,000.

Other big earners included a pair of rare Ferraris, a 1950 166 MM Barchetta and a 1955 750 Monza Spider, which took $3,080,000 and $4,070,000, respectively. Outside of the red Italians, a 1939 Mercedes-Benz 540K Special captured $7,480,000 while a stunning, color-appropriate 1955 Jaguar D-Type took $3,850,000. We've got images of these vehicles, and a few other stunning examples of last night's auction, in the gallery above.

Thought it seems impossible, tonight's auction is expected to see even more high-dollar action. The winner of the 2012 Pebble Beach Concours, a 1928 Mercedes-Benz 680S Torpedo Roadster is expected to command over $10 million. Also crossing the block will be a car we reported on a few weeks back - a supremely rare 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 NART Spyder. One of only 10 in the world, it's expected to take anywhere from $14 to $17 million when it hits the stage tonight.

Default Second day of RM's Monterey auction continues the million dollar madness

Second day of RM's Monterey auction continues the million dollar madness

Gallery:
http://www.autoblog.com/photos/rm-au...#photo-844991/

RM Auctions' two-day event during the Monterey car week is pretty much a matter of appetizer and main course. Friday night's appetizer saw a trio of multi-million-dollar Ferraris, along with a pre-war Mercedes-Benz and a Jaguar D-Type. You can read all about those beauties right here. But as we said in that post, the action would really happen on Saturday night. The prices listed below include RM's ten-percent commission fee, and, as you'll see, the auction house did pretty well for itself.

We've already told you about the $27.5 million winning bid for the 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 NART Spyder, with all the profits headed to charity. While there were more seven-figure winners on night two, the overall prices weren't quit as high as we saw on Friday night. The Ferrari F50 (pictured above) shown during the car's Geneva debut back in the 1990s and with only 1,100 miles on the clock took $1,677,500 (on a $1.25 to $1.6 million estimate). Another winner was a 1935 Hispano-Suiza K6 Cabriolet, which brought in $2,255,000 on a $1.5 to $2 million estimate. A 1974 McLaren M16C Indianapolis, the race winner of the 1974 Indy 500, brought home $3.52 million, essentially doubling its expected price of $1.25 to $1.75 million.

The night wasn't a success for everybody, though. The 1928 Mercedes-Benz 680S Torpedo Roadster, which took Best In Show at the 2012 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance failed to reach its $10-million expectations, selling for $8.25 million. That's not peanuts by any stretch, but a car that only goes for about 80 percent of its expected price isn't something to be enthusiastic about. A 1960 Maserati Tipo 61 Birdcage, which was expected to go for $3 to $4 million only took in $2,090,000.

Many more vehicles crossed the stage during last night's auction. Here are a few of the notables:

1960 Aston Martin DB4GT - $2,200,000
1971 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Spider (starred in Gumball Rally movie in 1976) -$1,650,000
1961 Ferrari 250 GT Cabriolet Series II - $1,100,000
1990 Ferrari F40 - $1,155,000
1954 Ferrari 500 Mondial Spider Series I - $3,520,000
1953 Maserati A6G/2000 Spyder - $2,530,000
1953 Maserati A6GCS/53 Spyder - $2,420,000 (no sale)
1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing - $1,265,000
1968 Toyota 2000GT - $935,000

Default 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 NART Spider sells for incredible $27.5 million

1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 NART Spider sells for incredible $27.5 million

Gallery:
http://www.autoblog.com/photos/1967-...#photo-844973/

In the charged atmosphere at day two of RM's Monterey auctions, a record-setting sum of money changed hands in exchange for one of the most exclusive Ferraris of all time. The 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 NART Spider blew away expectations last night, selling for a gavel price of $25 million and a total bill (after RM's 10-percent fee) of $27.5 million. Even in a room filled to bursting with collectors ready to spend millions on rolling sculpture, the sale price caused a major hubbub.

Bidding on the NART Spider, estimated before the auction to top out somewhere between $14M and $17M, started at $10M and was immediately raised with a whopping $16M second bid. The room seemed to hum as the price continued to rise, especially once the twenty-million-dollar mark had been crested.

While any Ferrari 275 GTB is likely to be an auction darling, the 1967 NART car had every factor in place to make it a true whale. Only ten of these North American Racing Team cars was ever built; the Spider appeared in 1968's The Thomas Crown Affair with that movie's star, Steve McQueen numbered amongst the first NART owners (he crashed his); this specific car has had only one owner from new; and finally, the long-standing owner of the car announced that all of the proceeds from the auction would be given to charity. Clearly, the night had a lot of winners.

The actual winner, as reported by Bloomberg, was Lawrence Stroll, a Canadian entrepreneur who helped develop the ultra successful Tommy Hilfiger clothing brand in the 1990s. The $27.5 million that Stroll laid out represents a record-high for a car sold at auction in the US and the second-best tally for any car at auction, just trailing the $29.7M paid for a 1954 Mercedes-Benz W196 driven by Juan Manuel Fangio.

ROLLS-ROYCE ALPINE TRIAL CENTENARY COLLECTION CAR MAKES NORTH AMERICAN DEBUT AT QUAIL

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars today unveils the Alpine Centenary Collection Car to North American attendees at Quail, A Motorsport Gathering. Part of the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance weekend.

A century ago, four Rolls-Royce Silver Ghosts embarked on the Austrian Alpine Trials, the most arduous test of automotive endurance of the time.

In performing without fault over 1,820 grueling miles of near impassable mountain terrain, the Rolls-Royce Works Team and privateer entrant James Radley helped cement the marque's reputation for peerless reliability and mechanical excellence, a reputation the company proudly retains today. The Silver Ghosts' performance establishing Rolls-Royce as creator of the 'Best Car in the World'.

The Bespoke department at the Home of Rolls-Royce in Goodwood, England celebrates these endeavours with the North American launch of the Alpine Trial Centenary Collection.

The first time a Bespoke model has taken inspiration from a heritage Rolls-Royce, this limited edition of Rolls-Royce Ghosts features exquisitely crafted design cues that pay tribute to the 1913 Alpine Trials cars. The exterior paint hue, for example takes close inspiration from Radley's Silver Ghost, a car that will participate in this year's reenactment of the 1913 Alpine Trial, as part of the Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Works Team.

The Radley car's distinct black grille and wheels are also replicated across the collection – the first time a painted grille has adorned a contemporary Rolls-Royce motor car.

The cabin plays host to Bespoke details that elegantly tell the story of the Alpine Trial. The clock displays the stages of the rally and timings, whilst inlays to rear picnic tables and the front fascia express the topography and distances of the Alpine route. Each element is meticulously hand-crafted and researched to ensure accuracy, epitomising hallmark Rolls-Royce attention to detail.

A hand-painted coachline referencing the four Rolls-Royces that took part in the rally and headlining, colour-matched to the hood of Radley's car, completes a beautiful homage.

"The 1913 Alpine Trial was an extraordinary moment in the rich history of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars," said Torsten Müller-Ötvös, CEO Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. "The standards of engineering and pioneer spirit required to achieve such feats stands as inspiration to everyone associated with the marque. The Bespoke Alpine Trial Centenary Collection is a fitting tribute to these achievements. It is testament to the enduring quality of a Rolls-Royce motor car that this 2013 car will be joined by a participant in the original trials, the 1913 Radley Silver Ghost."

In June of 2013, the Alpine Trial Centenary Collection Car joined the original James Radley Silver Ghost and 46 other enthusiastic competitors in the 100th Anniversary rerunning of the original Alpine Trials Rally. Through 17 days and more than 1,800 miles, 47 magnificent Silver Ghosts wafted their way through the Alps, accompanied by the Rolls-Royce Motor Cars 'Works Team', An event which will live in the memories of those that saw the marvel at first hand for many years to come.

History was brought to life by the intrepid owners as they piloted their machines with consummate skill up challenging Alpine passes and across the borders of five countries, before emerging in Vienna just as the original competitors did exactly 100 years before. The 2013 Centenary Alpine Trial was also graced with British Royalty, Lords and Ladies, Ambassadors and participants from 12 countries as far flung as Australia and the United States.

Corvette C7.R makes a camo'd debut run at Laguna Seca

This year's Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion was a Corvette-heavy affair, to be certain. Corvette had a giant pavilion to show of its spanking new C7 Stingray along side examples of each of the other six past cars, and the 2014 'Vettes were also running demonstration laps on the track between events. Both seemed popular with the crowds in Monterey.

But the perhaps the most exciting Corvette of the day was the running of the C7.R racecar prototype with Tommy Milner at the wheel. Still in development, and wearing standard-issue camouflage for this demonstration, the Laguna lap nevertheless presented our best look yet at the upcoming racer. Carryover design from the standard C7 is clear even with the wrapper in place, but no one will mistake this as anything but a competition piece with that lofty wing out back.

Corvette hasn't given us any indication about the greasy bits yet, but rumors seem to indicate that the C7.R will run some version of the same 5.5-liter LS7 V8 that lives under the bonnet of the current C6.R GT2. We've also heard that the car will debut with a traditional yellow Corvette livery.

Default 2013 Quail Motorsports Gathering wows with modern masterpieces

2013 Quail Motorsports Gathering wows with modern masterpieces

Pebble Beach is an outstanding event if you're interested in pre-war classics, but outside of the parking lots, it's a bit light on more modern stuff. The Quail, now in its eleventh year, leans far more towards the present day, and has become one of the must-attend events of the Monterey car week.

Like Pebble, though, it's a highly exclusive affair, with triple-digit ticket prices that usually sell out at the same rate as a Justin Bieber concert. If you're one of the lucky few to hold a pass, though, you'll be rubbing elbows with a who's who of the auto world. One of the highlights of this year's event was the appearance of one Michael Schumacher, who showed up alongside one of his Formula One cars. A retrospective was also held on Lamborghini's 50 years of production, as well as another celebration of Aston Martin's centennial. There was also a tribute to the late Martin Swig, one of the co-founders of the California Mille, who passed away last year.

The cars, not surprisingly, were epic. Lamborghini, Pagani, Spyker, Rolls-Royce, BMW, McLaren, Bugatti and Galpin Ford all showed new models to the public for the first time, while there were also appearances by Jim Glickenhaus and his Ferrari P4/5 and P4/5 Competizione, marking the first time the coach-built masterpiece and its racing offspring were shown together. Finally, the Petersen Museum showed off its wares, including the late Steve McQueen's gorgeous Jaguar XK-SS.

Default 2014 Saleen George Follmer Edition Mustang debuts at Laguna Seca

http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2014-...#photo-844927/

Saleen used the occasion of the race-fueled Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca to announce its new Heritage Collection Lineup. The event was punctuated with the debut of the collection's first member, the 2014 Saleen George Follmer Edition Mustang.

Follmer's name will likely sound familiar to fans of American racing in the 1960s and '70s. The driver competed in Formula One with the Shadow team in 1973, ran the Indianapolis 500, was the Can-Am champion in 1972 and drove stock cars in NASCAR's Winston Cup as well. The multi-disciplined driver is now one of three –the other two being Mark Donohue and Swede Savage – with the honor of upcoming, limited edition Saleen-tuned vehicles..

Wearing a tri-colored livery, 302 badges and no lack of scoops and louvers, the GF Edition car is instantly recognizable as a product of the Saleen styling department. The looks draw inspiration from Follmer's 1969 Boss 302 racecar, which was displayed on stage right alongside the new machine. The 19-inch, Minilite-style wheels help sell the retro looks, and are actually carryover items (or very similar) from Saleen products we've seen in the past.

Functionally, the GF's 302 V8 will be pushing out something like 470 horsepower (still an estimated number) and is mated up to a six-speed manual transmission. The extra power is due to the addition of cold air intake, a new throttle body and, we're guessing, a reflashed ECU. A race-tuned suspension with a watts linkage should keep the car pinned to the tarmac, as well. Expect an exhaust that will wake the neighbors to complete the can't-miss-me vibe of the GF Edition car.

The Mustang was the star of the show today, but Saleen has plans to bring two more Heritage cars to market at well. A Swede Savage Edition Barracuda is in the works, as is a Mark Donohue Edition Camaro. The GF Edition Mustang is slated to arrive in the spring of 2014; Saleen is estimated a sticker price right around the $70,000 mark.

"The Home of Rolls-Royce Collection showcases what makes Goodwood a unique centre of manufacturing excellence," said Torsten Müller-Ötvös, Chief Executive Officer, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. "A perfect blend of traditional crafts, cutting-edge technology and world-class Bespoke design has driven our success over our first 10 years. In this time, Rolls-Royce has taken its place as creator of the world's pinnacle super-luxury goods, an achievement built on the passion and commitment of every craftsperson employed at Goodwood. This beautiful collection is a fitting way to celebrate an extraordinary decade."

A 'celebration' motif, presented in hand-crafted marquetry on the front-fascia marks this landmark year in Rolls-Royce history. Using methods akin to the artistry of fine furniture makers, the effect is achieved through a process that marries cutting-edge technology with traditional craftsmanship.

Individual pieces of wood veneer are laser-cut to ensure precision. A craftsperson then painstakingly assembles the 170 sections made up from 11 varieties of woods, ensuring they perfectly express the vision of the marque's Bespoke design team. A fastidious process of quality control follows, utilising the world's most accurate measuring tool – the human eye.

In 2012 – a second successive record year for the marque – over 3,500 hand-built Rolls-Royce cars, exclusively created at Goodwood, were exported to all five continents. This is celebrated throughout the collection with a compass motif that expresses the Home of Rolls-Royce's position as a global centre of manufacturing excellence.

The pattern is also intricately embroidered into the armrests and console lid. 112,533 stitches are applied by precision embroidery machines that make 1,000 individual stitches per minute – however, such is the complexity of the pattern it takes over an hour to finish each individual piece. In total, 672 metres of thread is used with 450 pieces of individual leather to create the cosseting interior of the Home of Rolls-Royce Collection Phantom.

Co-ordinates engraved into tread plates, the bezel of the Spirit of Ecstasy and umbrella handles further express Goodwood's place as the only manufacturing centre for the world's pinnacle super-luxury marque.

A hand-painted coachline, culminating in a half-compass motif completes the exterior. Forming the final stage of a week-long, 22-stage painting process, coachlines are hand-applied by one highly-skilled craftsman using squirrel hair brushes. Normally this takes three hours – however the intricacy of this very special Bespoke design means the time taken to complete the process doubles.

The beauty and craftsmanship of every Home of Rolls-Royce Collection car runs much deeper than the hand polished painted surface of one of the 44,000 available exterior paint colors. The lightweight aluminium space frame that is at the core of every Phantom features 120 metres of precision hand welding and insures that the Home of Rolls-Royce Collection Phantom provides a refined driving experience. The 453bhp 6.75L V12 heart not only provides effortless acceleration but does so with the refinement of being able of supporting a British one pound coin stood on its edge on top of the running engine, as was originally specified by the Rolls-Royce engineers.

The Home of Rolls-Royce Collectioncars are currently being hand-built at Goodwood with delivery of the first customer cars to begin later this Autumn.

McLaren is making a habit of showing off the capabilities of its Special Operations department here at The Quail, during the Pebble Beach weekend. Last year the Special Ops folks brought us the tremendously cool McLaren X-1, while this year they've rolled in with a pair of customized MP4-12C Spiders that are all dressed up to party with the blue bloods.

Upgrades to the Macs are nearly all cosmetic, we were told, but unfortunately the company hasn't given us a detailed list of changes to the brace of Spiders. Obviously the Special Operations cars are wearing custom liveries here; the deep purple car somewhat outshining the two-tone, silver-roofed Spider it shares the stage with. The all-white hides in the interior of the Cesar Romero-spec 12C are actually quite lovely in person, and both cars surprise and delight with a host of small touches like the carbon fiber-backed hood emblem.

Love it or hate it, the Lamborghini Veneno is an incredible – and incredibly rare – car. With Lamborghini committed to building just three examples of the Veneno, it's very likely that we'll only ever see this pre-production show car in our lifetime.

That doesn't mean we'll be any less excited about laying our eyes on this fine example of the world's most-expensive production car, which we recently did as the Veneno made its US debut at the Quail Motorsports Gathering. Now that we see it again, it might look even better under the California sun than it did the last time we saw it under the bright lights of the Geneva Motor Show.
