All,

I have a 07 IS350 as my DD and am considering picking up a 996 Turbo as a weekend/fun car. Anyone on here with any first hand experience with them? Good, Bad, Ugly?

Haha......can't ignore their ultra low purchase price on the market huh? I don't have first hand experience, but I think is a good car, just have all the typical 911 issues, the only real problem is it is the least attractive 911 ever made.

I am having a hard time ignoring the ultra low price of the Ferrari F355! I can almost do a direct trade with my SC430!!

996 depreciates like no tomorrow for some reason, maybe the look. but it definitely makes it one hell of a car to get (for the money). i don't know of any crazy problems on the car, i have really thought hard about it.

No offence to 996 guys. It is mostly just ugly and sounds bad due to 1st gen water cooled. It defeat the purposes of having an exotic car, looking and sounding bad.

I can't do it, I have to drive something that attract me, 911 Turbo or not.

On the other hand, F355 looks cool and sounds amazing, I don't like how they drive though

Sometimes I just want to sell everything and buy a Prius, don't have to think about any of these stuff anymore.

The 997's are much nicer looking. But as me turned above at the price it's a bargain. Plus the aftermarket is huge and I will mod whatever it is I end up with.

993 and 997 worth twice as much as the 996.

996 is a good car to mod the hell out of and beat it to death.

I agree with everything above regarding the 993/997 being better looking than the 996 but the 997's are a little out of my price range. I'm looking in the 40-50K range. 993's also seem to be holding their value quite well. The appealing thing about the 996's is the fact that they are not "well liked" and because of that the depreciation hit them a lot harder.

I think for the same model level, the 993 typically worth more then the 997.

yup that's why the 996 is such an "affordable" car to own

i think jeff and i kind of replied that in our first posts. it's another typical porsche, i don't see any crazy problems, know a few friends with it, very fast and good handling for its generation.

my buddy has a 996 and he loves it. he got it for like 21k and drives it everywhere. His has 168k on the odo and drives like its brand new

IMS/RMS problems affect 5% of 996's.

IMS = Intermediate Shaft (issue for non turbo 996's)
RMS = Rear Main Seal

The RMS issue is a leaking seal. Most have already been replaced with new seals that do not leak.

IMS bearing failures are a real problem. The bearing that supports the intermediate shaft is prone to failure, and when it does fail it destroys your motor. The solution is to replace it: http://www.lnengineering.com/ims.html

That said, you get an amazing amount of performance per dollar with the 996tt.
