Owner Testimonial Shows How Safe Chevy Volt Actually Is
#16
I'm not so skeptical - this accident and Caroline's near-miraculous survival isn't that rare these days. With the crash protection available in most current cars . . . ten airbags, seatbelts, door guard beams, rollover protection, shatterproof glass, survival is much more likely in an accident than it was even ten years ago. Computer drafting, and finite element analysis in the computer has enabled engineers to subject all kinds of structures from bridges to aircraft under tremendous virtual loads to find their weak points and reinforce them.
If you look at the photo, you'll notice that the front end of the car was not heavily deformed by the collision, seeming to indicate that the majority of the damage was caused by the rollover. That's a lot easier to defend against than a high-speed collision because the forces to be absorbed or dissipated are considerably less.
Still, a fine example of the kind of engineering that went into the Volt, particularly in protecting the electric drive components that concern so many.
