my guess is passenger needs something to grip onto (assuming there's no overhead handle), while driver can grip the steering wheel.

I too, like balance, which is why the old waterfall designs of lexus interiors bode well with me. Now, what bothers me is that even though the dashes are horizontal, the vents, the nav screen, etc are a bit off center
