Never mind the prestige, feel the price

But we’re picking nits here about fine-points of handling that will be meaningless to most potential Genesis customers. No longer is the Genesis a case of “80 percent as good as the competition for 50 percent of the price,” as a Hyundai insider once put it to me. For 2015, it’s more like “in the same league as the competition for about 75 percent of the price.”
For many buyers in this segment, parking a prestige nameplate in their driveway will always be worth the extra money. But if that’s not your mind-set, the compelling value proposition of the Genesis represents its own kind of prestige.
2015 Hyundai Genesis
Base price: $43,000 - $62,000
Type of vehicle: AWD luxury sports sedan
Engines: 3.8-litre 24V, DOHC, V6; 5.0-litre 32V, DOHC V8
Power/Torque: 3.8: 311 hp/293 lb.-ft.; 5.0 TT: 420 hp/383 lb.-ft.
Transmission: Eight-speed automatic
0-100km/h: N/A
Fuel consumption (city/hwy): TBA
Competition: Acura RLX, Audi A4/A6, BMW 3 Series/5 Series, Buick LaCrosse, Cadillac CTS, Chrysler 300, Infiniti Q50/Q70, Jaguar XF, Lincoln MKS, Mercedes C-Class/E-Class, Volvo S60/S80
PREVIEW SUMMARY
PROS
A lot of car for not a lot of cash
Standard all-wheel drive
Vastly improved ride and handling
CONS
Some switchgear looks a little low-rent
Rather generic styling
Steering response could be sharper

Here's my styling critique, of course based solely on pictures. It may likely be better in person.
Exterior:
Belt-line/side view reminds me heavily of the prior gen Infiniti M, the late Avalon and Impala.
Rear, Sonata, Elantra, and Impala - a little bland.

Front:
Some Chrysler 300 resemblance
Interior:
heavily based on the 5-series, which clearly the Genesis is after.

Overall Styling Not bad overall, but seems more derivative and less distinctive this generation than the last. The last gen was a little more unique to my eyes and also more "macho".

I find the "lesser" Azera's styling is more successful as it has more sculpted lines.

Lexus Champion

I like the looks of the new Azera, but buyers haven't really warmed up to it for some reason. Maybe because it's sandwiched in between the Sonata (which outsells it many times over) and the Genesis (which outsells it about 3 to 1 in spite of its higher price point) that it gets lost in the shuffle. It did well in a couple of comparison tests with competitive models.

there is no point on buying azera when you can just buy sonata or just buy bigger and more comfortable avalon or even buick.
if hyundai really wants to sell azera then it needs to get bigger. much bigger.

it really is not a crazy statement if you objectively think about it.
overall i think this genesis looks more 'mature' than GS. GS got much younger and bold. current lexus design direction is clearly love/hate. some really love it, some really hate the spindle grill.
i can see conservative crowd preferring genesis' exterior design over GS. but IMO, GS has clear interior design edge. that's just me. i think genesis' interior is way too vanilla

One of my neighbors just got a new Azera (she loves it)......and, of course, a bottle of SCRATCH-OUT.
You are correct about the low sales...but that also means good deals. ![Wink](https://www.clublexus.com/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif)
Nice of a car that it is, though, IMO, it doesn't have the superb drive-dynamics of the new Impala...but Impalas are distinctly harder to deal on right now. The hype from Consumer Reports (IMO mostly but not totally justified) is stirring demand for Impalas.

I'm not gonna lie, I was seriously considering the 2015 Genesis until I saw several quality issues with the interior of the 2013 model. If Genesis wants to play up to Lexus level, they'll need to address these fundamentals of quality and workmanship before they get my business.
Thats what's up.
