Default Toyota plans to launch large hybrid SUVs in 2016

(Reuters) - Toyota Motor Corp (7203.T) plans to roll out hybrid versions of its large sport utility vehicles from 2016 to prepare for tougher environmental regulations, the Nikkei reported, quoting sources.

The automaker intends to develop hybrid systems capable of powering such big vehicles, the newspaper reported.

Toyota plans to add a hybrid version of the Land Cruiser SUV to the line-up and introduce such versions of its international multipurpose vehicles, such as the Fortuner, designed for emerging markets, the business daily reported.

Toyota, which debuted its first mass-produced hybrid car, the Prius, in 1997, now offers about 20 hybrid models, mostly passenger cars, according to the Nikkei.

The company has sold more than 5 million hybrid cars globally so far, the newspaper said.

Toyota's hybrid cars such as the Crown are 20-30 percent more fuel-efficient than non-hybrid models, the Nikkei said.

Improving mileage has become a key issue for automakers as the United States and other countries tighten environmental rules, the newspaper said.

Let's see how this works out. Maybe for the Sequoia and Land Cruiser or an actual replacement. This may drive up the price though, and let me say it didn't work out so well for GM and it's large Hybrid SUVs

well, this doesnt have anything to do with GM... their system was horrible and none of their hybrids sold well.

toyota wont spend time on it unless they think it makes sense.

well you can learn from mistakes. And the pricing is key. You don't see GS450h's for a reason. $70K for a Hybrid Sequoia? No thanks

GM doesnt, I dont see why Toyota would even develop it if it was that expensive.

There is little doubt that every Toyota in the future will have hybrid engine at least optional... around 50% of their sales in Japan are hybrids and now thats around 30% for Europe too.

lol..my pops has asked about this for near a decade…..I think it will be a hit…the market shows people with the disposable income do like to stand out and once the hybrid gain is decent, it should do well

Well the GM ones easily got to the price. Sequoias already get into the high $50Ks. And looking at Toyota/Lexus hybrid markups it could easily be at $70K. I personally don't see it other than a niche market, and towing numbers are usually compromised.

I thought in some Scandinavian countries it was 100% only hybrids available.

thats for Lexus that sell in small amounts (only hybrids)... Toyota sells everything from gas to diesel to hybrids, and hybrids are at premium as usual, just not that much.

While they have tax advantage is some countries, those are usually smaller ones... our best sellers are Yaris Hybrid and Auris Hybrid, not Prius.

They will go over 50% easily once more hybrids come out, like Avensis and Rav4.

I think Lexus is 75% hybrid now in Europe, but as you said it is mostly sold hybrid only anyway so thats not a "big" deal.

GM hybrids sucked because they got bad fuel economy. Their mild hybrids got worse fuel economy than same car with 4cly engine.

no hybrid Estima in the US, no care.
Also, people movers/trucks/SUVs should be diesel hybrids. Oh well, maybe in another 20 years
