They probably sell like 300 of these per year and it's probably not even profitable for Mercedes but it elevates the brand name.

I like it when car companies do this even though from a business standpoint it makes absolutely no sense to make something that almost nobody will buy because the price is so prohibitive.

the friday before, we got deflivery of the s550, exterior wise, its more sublet, not as agressive as the s63.

here's an interior dash shot. im on the fence about better part of the dash being 2 large lcds.

one funny point that my apprentice made. in the view of the driver, when looking down at the instrument cluster, the 2 dials look like big clown eyes while the bottom of the 2 point steering wheel looks like a huge clown smile.

exaggeration but you get the point...

they also do this as this IS their flagship segment. weather they sell a lot of models or not becomes besides the point, as they use the car to show case all new technology and "testing the segment" options.

Doesn't always have to make business sense from a monetary standpoint, as other have said it Elevates the S-Class. That in itself gives to a more prestigeous view of the brand.

Yup agreed.

This isn't necessarily about maximum sales numbers............but rather is meant to be a showcase for the brand AS WELL as to make a statement.

A Halo so to speak. And what's nice is Mercedes has muliple Halos. The SLS and E-Drive Version represent a pinnacle in MBZ Sport Performance while the S-Class showcases Luxury. Both share exclusivity

I don't think I've seen any actual criticism about this car besides maybe the tail end being too "droopy" (it looks fine). An incredible car all around, especially the camera linked active body control.

I wish Lexus would start doing this too. If they want to open up European sales they need to get more serious about elevating the brand name

I agree, it doesn't quite match the rest of the upscale interior. However, it does give the advantage of greater customization and I think we'll see this becoming much more common.

I think this thing has a feature where they can add a cape with a huge S65 on it for the driver.

LFA, they skipped the ultra luxury large sedan segment and went straight after the exotic super car segment.
