Seriously, if he wants a cheap, reliable convertible that gets good mileage for $5k, tell him to buy a Miata or MR-S. Otherwise, tell him to spend more money. 70 is too old to be a foolish car buyer.

This is how I would evaluate this decision process, as with most things in life: use your limited resource to buy the newest and best possible. B\c down the road you will regret "oh I should've got the porsche but I wanted to save some money, and now I'm $30,000 into the car note and find myself still longing after the shield brand.
