The high price was also why they had to discontinue it.
Unfortunately Japanese sports cars will not sell if they are overpriced.
New Supra needs to be around $55-65k, higher than a Mustang but cheaper than a Corvette.
There is room there in that niche for a well made sports car. At $80-90k nobody will buy it.

Those are key price points must consider not to overprice it. If it's double the most expensive FRS, (around $65k), I'd be happy with that.

We are living in different times, and Supra will not be the 90ies Supra that could be modified to make crazy power with relatively simple and inexpensive mods. Given that it is being developed jointly with BMW, it is going to be a lot more high tech, delicate and refined. And I don't think the targeted buyers are going to be in a rush to modify the new Supras into 1/4 mile dragsters.

Most people with N54, N55, B58 and S55 are running a tune. Its very CHEAP and very EASY.
People in the 90s can only dream of making power even close to what you can do now with a $500 tune.
BTW Supra owners care about POWER not finesse / delicate sports car.
Also you may want to checkin with Nissan GTR owners who are addicted to big HP and 1/4 times. Believe me the Supra crowd wants same thing.
Magic of the 2JZ MKIV was that it could handle a bunch of power on stock internals and stock trans not that it was cheap to up the power. You can’t just due a ‘tune’ and get 100hp extra at the wheels like u can on a modern turbo car. Plus cooling for the added power is REALLY expensive and where the new engines are much better.

Yes, I'm familiar with those, and I had a stage 1 kit from Burger tuning in my old m235i. However once you start going beyond a tune, things get very complicated with BMWs. You're not simply slapping a big turbo and upgrading the fuel system, in fact from what I know the high pressure fuel pump is the limiting factor for most modern DI turbo engines.

Personally I am disappointed that Toyota isn't developing the new Supra on their own, but on the other hand knowing that BMW is involved it will be hard for Toyota to mess it up like they did with pretty much everything in the last decade or so, except perhaps the LFA.

It won't be 80K-90K based on a BMW roadster with a BMW inline 6. This will be a smaller lower end car then the last Supra and will be competing more against a 370Z, Mustang, Camaro, Z4 and not like the last Supra that was going against the Corvette, 928/911, 3000GT, 300ZXtt, GTR. If they just give it around 330hp they will have to price it around 50K or lower, 80K to 90K is more then a BMW M4 and they are not going to give it M4 power or performance or price it more then a M4.

That being said, the LC500 pays homage to the original SC300/400 with certain interior bits. That's what I meant by cool "Japanesy" accents in the new Supra. The big American three have pulled it off very nicely with the Challenger, Mustang and Camaro.

I loved the interior of the last Supra. For the time it was good quality and a cool design that put all the functions wrapped around the driver. If you think the Supra was bad, sit in a Mustang, Camaro, or Corvette from that era and you will see how much nicer the Supra's was.

They went so cheap with the 350Z/370Z interiors for some reason, they were/are no better then a Mustang or Camaro which was not the case with the 300ZXtt in the 90's, 300ZXtt is nicer then the 350Z/370Z too as well as Corvettes and Mustangs at the time.

Nissan as a whole was cheapened in that era in an effort to return to profitability. Wasn't just the 350Z that was victim to that. Nissans have never been the same since, IMO.

“I can’t disclose specific figures, but the output of this engine is on a par with that which we have with the F-Series from Lexus,” Tada said. The RC-F and GS-F make 389lb ft. He continued: “But you can imagine from seeing it that the car is light and compact – its wheelbase is even shorter than the GT86’s. It’s around 200-300kg lighter than the F-Series [which weighs around 1700-1800kg].”
This backs information recently leaked onto the web that claimed that the Supra will weigh 1496kg, making it 250kg heavier than the GT86 and 14kg lighter than the fourth-generation Supra, which went out of production in 2002. This would also make the car 14kg lighter than a PDK-equipped Porsche 911 Carrera S, with which the Supra’s expected 0-62mph time of 3.8sec would make it most comparable.
