I find it strange that there are still such obsolete products on the market over there. Here if you want something older that API SL you need to look at motorcycle oils or something meant for agricultural machines.
Anyway, know what your machinery requires and choose a product that fullfills them.

It's not obsolete oil, it is shady crooked companies selling complete crap as motor oil to make easy money from women and naive men while having no shame in ruining their engine in the process
Some state attorneys are finally starting to crack down on this, but these fake oils can be found at the corner convenience store in most US states!

Good morning,
This was some really great information! I didn't know about the classification system. In the future I'll remember to check the classification of my oil.
Thanks and take care.

So i shouldn't buy my gallon size oil jugs at the Dollar Tree afterall?!?!?
Just kidding of course, but i think it would be interesting to see these factories where that nasty motor oil is produced. I bet they have a fleet of KitchenAid mixers on the production line!

it's not just the classification/rating you want to look at, that could be faked too - I would not normally endorse anything to do with big corporate brands, I despise the corporate crooks, but in this case, I will make an exception, don't ever use any oil you haven't seen a TV commercial for! (well maybe a couple of exceptions such as Royal Purple, Amsoil, ENEOS and Redline, but you know what I mean, no brands you never heard of!)

Over the years, though there are exceptions of course, seems like the majority of racing-teams (among the organizations that have the most to use from using crappy oils) have used one of three major brands.....Castrol, Valvoline, or Penzoil, with Texaco's Havoline brand also being fairly popular once. I myself am sold on Castrol...I've used it most of the times I actually did one of my own oil-changes.
The SAE official classification-ratings, BTW, are nothing new....they were printed on oil-cans/bottles as far back as I can remember from the 1960s, and actually go back further than that.
