UK magazine What Car? has compared the real-world gas mileage of five luxury sports sedans and found the Lexus IS 300h to deliver the best results.
The IS 300h, which is officially rated at 64.2 mpg in Britain, returned 59.6 mpg in the What Car? test. The Mercedes C220 CDI, despite having an official rating of 68.9 mpg, finished second with 57.5 real-world mpg.

everyone's mpg figures are bull, they are gov mandated tests that are simply poor in EU, and it is done on purpose to give start/stop systems better look.
But still, proof that hybrids get better mpg than diesels, despite what every single review from german and uk media wrote, including what car themselves.

I have never looked at diesel as being efficient. Hybrid is the right way to do so, and Japanese thought the same. Hence, Prius is best selling in Japan.
Thanks op for the good info

thats bec nobody buys them.
If Lexus offered a hybrid version thats cheaper than the gas variant, it would have more success.
Sort of like the CT200h.
Ppl buy Prius cause its cheap and great on gas.

A few months ago CR did a recap of the vehicles that missed their EPA estimates in their Road Test. 55% of the hybrids they tested missed theirs by 10% or more, 20% of small turbos by 10% or more and 10% of conventional gas engines. They didn't list diesels.
In general Toyota/Lexus hybrids came closer to their estimates than some of the other brands of hybrids.

The biggest problem of the EPA tests is that report a number that seems realistic and obtainable, yet every single person's daily route and driving habit's differ. Essentially, the EPA reports the BEST YOU COULD EVER GET, and you can only go down from there.
No one in Europe believes they will get 65 MPG. They understand it's simply a test score.

At the D.C. show last week, the Lexus reps said that the HS was killed off by low sales (which, of course, most of us on CL already knew anyway). What surprised me, though, was that (apparantly), even Lexus management (according to the show-reps), after they had developed and marketed the HS, never really warmed up to the car, didn't think it looked like a proper Lexus, and didn't fit in with the company's lineup. Personally, I thought the HS was actually more Lexus-like than the small, cramped, rough-riding CT. But, according to the sales numbers (which, of course, one cannot argue with), the CT trumped the HS in sales month after month. One Lexus rep at the show said that a CT sedan was currently under development...the other reps were either mum on the subject or simply denied it.
