If you are going to get a GS, get an 07 GS350 and avoid the carbon build-up issues that the 06's have (similar to the IS250).

That's probably my only advice.

I think a lot of it depends on her personality. I think the IS is much more sporty/young/sexy.

if she want good gas milage and small, a HS250 or CT200h might be a good choice, easy to park with the backup camera, sporty, but kinda bumpy.

As for my mom she hate the look of her current RX but she loves it because the trunk is huge and the car is really easy to drive, the car does sit really high so as soon as you open the door you can just slide your butt in, open the door again you can slide your butt out and you are already standing. really almost no stress on your knees. most RX i see on the road equip with front and rear parking sensor + backup camera, so parking will be absolutely no problem.

so conclusion?

I will go with Hyundai Tucson.
Hyundai Tucson are good choice, if you watch the walking dead, that car is super reliable and zombie proof, i never heard about them running out of gas, and with no hyundai dealer around them the car almost no need any maintenance.

IS=sport luxury and I think the GS may be too big for just her. I'd just look at a Camry for practically unless you NEED a Lexus.

What about the CT hybrid model? She would like the better fuel mileage I'm sure and smaller overall vehicle package size.

I too would consider she look at an ES. The IS is smaller, but less comfortable...the ES rides much better and is easier to drive the ways she's going to be driving.

Careful. I don't want to speak directly for him, but some guys might not appreciate their moms refered to by that term. A cougar is an older woman who pursues younger men.
Its a joke, both the comment about the ES being an old moms car and about his mom being a cougar. I had two ESs and it would never even occur to me to be insulted by that comment, nor if anybody said the thing to me about "Get that cougar an LS" about my mother in that way would it even occur to me to be insulted.

I took both comments as being humorous. It's no secret that the ES has always been favored by an older crowd of men and women and for good reasons. I think it would be a good choice for someone's mom.
