I see your point, but its more complex than Phone v Phone Carrier v Phone Vendor. Guest v Service/widget v Dealer can be more a mess. It's easy to pass the blame on to the next guy, and guest could be going back and forth for awhile. Compatibility arguments are common, mostly when it comes to phones, garage doors/homelink etc.. As it stands, the whole "process of elimination" by using similar equipment and proving the jack wrong is always fun
