NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V311000
Component(s):
Potential Number of Units Affected: 660,238
All Products Associated with this Recall
Vehicle Make Model Model Year(s)
SUBARU FORESTER 2009-2013
SUBARU IMPREZA 2008-2014
SUBARU LEGACY 2005-2009
SUBARU OUTBACK 2005-2009
Details
Manufacturer: Subaru of America, Inc.

SUMMARY:
Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is recalling certain model year 2005-2009 Outback and Legacy, 2008-2011 Impreza and 2008-2014 Impreza WRX/STI, and 2009-2013 Forester vehicles, currently, or formerly, registered in Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia. Salt water could splash on the brake lines through a gap in the fuel tank protector, resulting in excessive corrosion of the brake lines.

Brake line corrosion may result in brake fluid leakage. Fluid leakage may result in longer distances being required to slow or stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

REMEDY:
Subaru will notify owners, and dealers will test the brake system by depressing the brake pedal and inspecting for brake fluid leaks. If no brake fluid seepage is observed, the affected areas will be rustproofed with anti-corrosion wax. If brake fluid seepage is observed, the brake lines will be replaced followed by rustproofing with anti-corrosion wax. These services will be performed free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Subaru at 1-800-782-2783. Subaru's recall campaign number is WQK-47. Note: This recall supersedes recall 13V-110 which applied to certain 2005-2009 Legacy/Outback vehicles. Vehicles that were remedied under the previous campaign still need additional areas rust-proofed.

NOTES:
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Default GM recalls 2014 Cadillac CTS recall

No, that headline isn't a typo – General Motors has reportedly issued a recall for one of its own recalls. The recall of a recall affects the recall of the 2014 Cadillac CTS, which wasn't supposed to be recalled. Except that the 2014 CTS was supposed to be recalled. Oh no, now we've gone cross-eyed.

Allow us to explain. The redesigned, third-generation CTS Sedan does not feature a faulty ignition switch, while the 2014 CTS Coupe and Wagon, which are based on the second-gen car, do. And as it turns out, there are only 264 of those vehicles included in last week's 8.2-million-unit, ignition-switch recall. Model year 2003 to 2013 CTS Sedans, Coupes and Wagons are still covered.

It's not entirely clear how this, frankly, colossal mistake was made, although we're betting GM is rapidly trying to get to the bottom of this embarrassing issue. Regardless, let's just take what solace we can in there being one less vehicle that GM has recalled this year.

Default Acura recalls 2013-2014 ILX, ILX Hybrid over fire-prone headlamps

Statement by Acura Regarding Headlight Recall: 2013-2014 Acura ILX
07/08/2014 - TORRANCE, Calif.

14,078 model-year 2013-2014 ILX vehicles affected in the U.S.
Halogen projector beam headlights will be replaced, free of charge
One fire was reported after car was parked with engine idling and lights on for several hours
No related crashes or injuries have been reported

Acura will voluntarily recall 14,078 model-year 2013-2014 ILX vehicles in the United States to replace both halogen projector beam headlight assemblies free of charge. When a vehicle is parked with the engine running and the low-beam headlights on for an extremely long period of time, the original headlight design may not allow sufficient heat to escape. Excessive heat buildup in the headlight assembly can cause deformation and melting of plastic components which could affect headlight operation and, eventually, result in a fire. One fire was reported after the ILX had been parked with the headlights on and engine idling for several hours. No crashes or injuries have been reported related to this issue.

Acura is announcing this recall to encourage all owners who purchased an affected vehicle to take it to an authorized dealer as soon as they receive notification of this recall from Acura. Mailed notification to customers will begin in late-July. In addition to contacting customers by mail, at that time, owners of these vehicles will be able to determine if their vehicles require repair by going to www.recalls.acura.com or by calling (800) 382-2238 and selecting option 4.

Default Ford issues six recalls covering 101,000 vehicles for multiple issues

Ford Issues Safety Recall for Certain 2012-2014 Taurus/MKS/Interceptor, Flex/MKT, Edge/MKX Vehicles in North America for Potential Halfshaft Disengagement

Ford is issuing a safety recall for approximately 92,000 (actual 92,022) 2013-2014MY Taurus/MKS/Interceptor sedans and Flex/MKT vehicles, 2012-2014 MY Edge vehicles, and 2014 MY MKX vehicles for a potential issue with the right-hand halfshaft. In some of the affected vehicles, the circlip that retains the right-hand halfshaft to the linkshaft may not have been fully seated during assembly. A halfshaft that is not fully seated may move outward over time. If the halfshaft becomes fully disengaged from the linkshaft, vehicles may experience loss of drive function. Additionally, this condition may result in unexpected vehicle movement if the gearshift is placed in Park without the parking brake being activated. No accidents or injuries have been attributed to this condition.

Dealers will inspect to verify the right-hand halfshaft is fully inserted and retained on the linkshaft. If the halfshaft is not fully inserted, dealers will replace the linkshaft and replace the halfshaft if it is damaged.
Affected vehicles include:
• Taurus/MKS: 2013-2014MY vehicles with a 3.5L AWD powertrain built at Chicago Assembly Plant August 25, 2011 – November 30, 2013.
• Police Interceptor Sedan: 2013-2014MY vehicles with 3.5L GTDI AWD, 3.5L & 3.7L TiVCT FWD & AWD powertrains built at Chicago Assembly Plant August 25, 2011 – November 30, 2013
• Flex/MKT: 2013-2014MY with the 3.5L GTDI AWD powertrain built at Oakville Assembly Plant September 12, 2011 – November 29, 2013.

As of June 23, 2014, approximately 83,000 are in the U.S. and federalized territories (actual 83,250). Approximately 8,200 are in Canada (actual 8,173) and approximately 600 are in Mexico (actual 599).

Ford Issues Safety Recall for Certain 2014 Ford Escape Vehicles for Potential Issue with Panorama Roof Glass

Ford is issuing a safety recall for approximately 2,100 (actual 2,124) 2014MY Ford Escape vehicles in North America for a potential issue with panorama roof glass that may have an improperly cured urethane bond between the glass and the attaching bracket. A panorama roof glass assembly with an improperly cured urethane bond may result in noise, water leak, or separation of the glass panel from the vehicle, potentially increasing the risk of an accident or injury. No accidents or injuries have been attributed to this condition.
Dealers will replace the front roof glass panel if the date and sequence number located on the glass label fall within the suspect build range. Affected vehicles include certain 2014 Ford Escape vehicles built October 15, 2013 – October 22, 2013 at the Louisville Assembly Plant. As of June 23, 2014, approximately 1,870 are in the U.S. and federalized territories (actual 1,867). Approximately 140 (actual 143) are in Canada and approximately 115 (actual 114) are in Mexico.

Ford Issues Safety Recall for Certain 2014 Ford Fiesta Vehicles in North America for Potential Fuel Tank Issue

Ford is issuing a safety recall for approximately 200 (actual 197) 2014MY Ford Fiesta vehicles in North America for a potential issue with the fuel tank. Fuel tanks built during a specific time period at the supplier may be missing an adhesive layer. Without this adhesive layer, a fuel tank may leak fuel from a seam. A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source may result in a fire.
No accidents, injuries or fires have been attributed to this condition.

Dealers will replace the fuel tank at no cost to the customer. Affected vehicles include certain 2014 Ford Fiesta vehicles built October 25, 2013 – February 27, 2014 at the Cuautitlan Assembly Plant. As of June 23, 2014, 175 are in the U.S. and federalized territories. 12 are in Canada and 10 are in Mexico.

Ford Issues Safety Recall for Certain 2011-2014 F59 Commercial Stripped Chassis Vehicles for Potential Junction Block Issue

Ford is issuing a safety recall for approximately 5,250 (actual 5,264) 2011-2014MY Ford F59 Commercial Stripped Chassis vehicles in North America for a potential issue with the junction block. Some of the affected vehicles may contain an electrical junction block that, if operated in a corrosive environment associated with road salt, can form a conductive path between the junction block and the mounting bracket that may lead to a short circuit. As a result, the driver may experience smoke coming from the right front wheel well, a loss of electrical power, or potentially a fire, with or without the engine running. No accidents or injuries have been attributed to this condition.

Dealers will replace the junction block with an improved design at no cost to the customer. Affected vehicles include certain 2011-2014 F59 Commercial stripped chassis vehicles built at the Detroit Chassis plant December 17, 2009 – April 30, 2014. As of June 23, 2014, approximately 4,850 are in the U.S. and federalized territories (actual 4,867). Approximately 400 are in Canada (actual 397).

Ford Issues Safety Recall for Certain 2014 F53 and F59 Stripped Chassis Vehicles for Potential Brake Caliper Issue

Ford is issuing a safety recall for approximately 600 (actual 635) 2014MY Ford F53 Motorhome Stripped Chassis and F59 Commercial Stripped Chassis vehicles in North America for a potential issue with the brake calipers. Some of the affected vehicles may contain brake calipers that may have been incorrectly machined and could result in a leak between the piston and piston bore. The leak may result in the loss of braking performance in one of the two brake system hydraulic circuits. If this leak occurs, the operator would experience longer brake pedal travel and increased stopping distances, potentially increasing the risk of a crash. No accidents or injuries have been attributed to this condition.

Dealers will inspect the brake calipers and replace those with affected cast lot and build date codes at no cost to the customer. Affected vehicles include certain 2014 F53 Motorhome and F59 Commercial stripped chassis vehicles built at the Detroit Chassis plant February 14, 2014 – March 7, 2014. As of June 23, 2014, all of the affected vehicles are in the U.S. and federalized territories.

Ford Issues Safety Non-Compliance Recall for Certain 2014 Transit Connect Vehicles in Puerto Rico for Brake Fluid Reservoir Cap Issue

Ford is issuing a recall for approximately 370 (actual 368) 2014MY Ford Transit Connect vehicles to address a non-compliance issue with the brake fluid reservoir cap in Puerto Rico. The brake reservoir cap on the affected vehicles does not conform to the FMVSS 135 brake system labeling requirement. Certain 2014MY Ford Transit Connect vehicles were shipped to Puerto Rico with a European brake reservoir pictogram cap label, which does not contain the text mandated by FMVSS 135. No accidents or injuries have been attributed to this condition.

Dealers will replace the brake reservoir cap with an FMVSS 135 compliant cap at no cost to the customer. Affected vehicles include certain 2014 Ford Transit Connect vehicles built at the Valencia (Spain) Assembly Plant March 1, 2014 – May 15, 2014. As of June 23, 2014, all affected vehicles are in Puerto Rico.

Default Takata airbag recall spreads to China with 42k Mazda sedans

The scope of the problem with the faulty airbag inflators from Takata continues to broaden and is now reaching China, as well. Mazda is recalling 42,732 Mazda6 units there, produced by its local joint venture partner China FAW Car Company, to replace the front passenger airbags. It comes as part of Mazda's recall of nearly 160,000 vehicles worldwide, including about 34,600 in the US, according to Reuters.

This is the same problem that caused seven automakers in the US to recall an estimated 2.1 million vehicles in late June. The airbag inflators can potentially explode instead of deploying the airbag, which hampers the bag's inflation. In some cases occupants are also hit by the metal shrapnel, which can cause further injuries. In the US, Mazda is repairing the 2003-2007 Mazda6 (pictured above), 2006-2007 Mazdaspeed6, 2004 MPV and 2004-2008 RX-8 originally sold in or currently registered in Florida, Puerto Rico, and Hawaii.

This is hardly the first instance of this issue. Since 2001, there have been 20 recalls tied to the exploding airbags supplied by Takata. The problem is possibly linked to the propellant in the inflators, but there's no conclusive evidence of that yet. Most of the automakers in the US limited the most recent recalls only to a few humid states because moisture potentially exacerbated the problem.

The complaints indicated that the driver's side exhaust manifold shield can dislodge due to corrosion of the attachment bolts and become jammed between the manifold and steering shaft preventing the steering from turning or requiring excessive force to overcome the interference. In one incident (VOQ 10578715), the steering allegedly locked up on a highway entrance ramp, causing a rollover crash and injury. The complaint indicated that the heat shield was discovered to be dislodged after the crash, with witness marks from the alleged obstruction between the steering shaft and engine block.

A preliminary evaluation has been opened to assess the frequency, scope and safety consequences of the alleged defect.
VOQs associated with this investigation are: 10317493, 10471833, 10479681, 10545112, 10578715

Default 2014 Mercedes SL and SLK add small expansion to Takata airbag recall

Mercedes-Benz is the latest automaker to be affected by Takata's massive airbag recall. The company has announced a voluntary recall campaign on a small number of model-year 2014 SLK- and SL-Class roadsters.

In Mercedes' case, 300 vehicles are affected, 200 of which are in the hands of customers. According to spokesperson Donna Boland, the affected roadsters were built between March and April of this year.

The issue, which is apparently the fault of one of Takata's subcontractors, rests with some improperly installed fasteners, which could keep the airbag from performing the way it's supposed to. According to Boland, Mercedes isn't sure what, if any, injuries the recalled airbags could cause, but simply claims there's an increased risk in these particular vehicles. There's been no reported instances of the faulty airbags deploying on a customer and the original issue was found in a production test.

Mercedes has informed both owners of the affected cars and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, although at this point, it's unclear if this will expand beyond a simple voluntary recall.

Default Dodge and Jeep recalling 895k SUVs for possibility of headliner fires

Statement: Vanity-Mirror Wiring Upgrade
July 11, 2014 , Auburn Hills, Mich. -

Chrysler Group is recalling an estimated 895,000 SUVs to reroute wiring for vanity-mirror lights.

If a stated vehicle was involved in a repair related to servicing the vanity mirror and/or headliner, the wiring – located inside the sun visor – may be subject to short-circuit and fire if not appropriately reassembled by the dealer. This condition is not present in vehicles which have not had the headliner or vanity mirror serviced.

Chrysler Group is aware of three related injuries – each of which involved a vehicle that had the vanity mirror and/or headliner serviced.

Chrysler Group dealers will, at no cost to customers, install a spacer containing a wire guide feature that will keep the lines properly routed, preventing a potential short-circuit during reassembly.

In the interest of protecting our customers, this spacer will be installed in all vehicles within the range, regardless of whether or not the vanity mirror and/or headliner have been serviced.

The recall campaign is limited to certain 2011-2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango models. Chrysler Group will contact affected customers and advise them when service is available.

An estimated 651,000 vehicles are located in the U.S.; 45,700 are in Canada; 23,000 are in Mexico and 175,000 are outside the NAFTA region.

Customers with additional questions may call Chrysler Group's Customer Assistance Center at 1-800-853-1403.

NHTSA Action Number: EA14001 Headliner Fires

SUMMARY:
The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has identified 5 reports of vehicle headliners catching fire at the front of the vehicle near the sun visors on Jeep Grand Cherokees. Customers reported a range of fire conditions ranging from minor overheating to an open flame at the headliner and/or sun visor material while driving the vehicle. In some reports the fire spread to the front seats and/or door panels of the vehicle. In one report, the sunroof was damaged causing the glass to shatter. The cause of these fires is an electrical short in the vanity lighting wiring circuit that is routed to either one of the sun visors. The sun visors are mounted to the roof of the vehicle through the headliner with three screws. The sun visor wiring may be penetrated, or pierced by one of these screws either during initial vehicle assembly or subsequent headliner area repairs. The piercing causes an electrical short that could result in a fire. There is no dedicated fuse for the affected circuit so the electrical short can continue until the short clears or the vehicle is keyed off. The Dodge Durango uses the same headliner assembly, and Chrysler indicates there are similar headliner fire incidents affecting this model, therefore, these vehicles have been added to the scope of the investigation. Analyzing the data received from Chrysler along with ODI reports indicates there may be a total of 52 unique fire incidents (including 3 injury allegations) on Grand Cherokee and Durango vehicles which ODI will continue to evaluate during the investigation. Based on ODI's evaluation of currently available data, this investigation is being upgraded to an Engineering Analysis. The ODI reports cited above can be reviewed at http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/owners/SearchSafetyIssues under the following identification (ODI) numbers: 10556110, 10536895, 10522665, 10522159, 10515592.
