Small cars are becoming big business, especially for European automakers that are amping up the style. But is each new Euro city car's style unique?

Lapo Elkann is calling that into question. The brother of Fiat chairman John Elkann and the grandson of his late predecessor Gianni Agnelli is known as much as a style icon as he is for his work within the Fiat Group, which he has served in various capacities. He's combined the two by birthing various special editions of the Fiat 500 like the Gucci edition (to say nothing of his own denim-clad Ferraris), but now his eye is fixed on another European city car: the new Renault Twingo.
Posting photos of both vehicles on his Facebook page, Lapo is calling Renault out for what he sees as copying the Cinquecento's design.

This who-copies-who stuff is getting a little long in the tooth. I've said before, in several posts, that with the huge number of vehicles in the industry today, it's getting harder and harder to design a vehicle that doesn't look like SOME other vehicle, SOMEWHERE. Even the butt-ugly Pontiac Aztek, which everybody loved to pan, in some ways wasn't a totally original design.

And, for that matter, if Elkann wants to point fingers at Renault for copying the Fiat 500, he should stop and consider that the current Fiat 500 itself, in some ways, is quite similiar to the 70s/80s-vintage Renault 5 (LeCar).

The Renault is a total ripoff IMO. All they did was change the details(trim around wheelwells, position/shape of the headlights, type of door mirrors). Proportions are EXACTLY the same.

You're not the only one. I've said time and again you can only reinvent the wheel so many times. A car is a car is a car, and trends seem to go by decade. 40's cars look like 40's cars, 80's looked like 80's and current look like current which is a more fluid design as of late. There's only so many ways of making a sedan, hatch, SUV, truck etc.. so of course they'll look similar. Many manufacturers know this and try to add their own spin to it be it a corporate snoz or recongnizable lighting.

profile is exactly the same, you are correct... it is blatant rip-off.

you dont have to copy, they just chose to.

New Aygo is similar class and yet it looks like nothing else on the market.
