on the first try, if you just hold the key will it eventually start?
another idea, have you tried putting it to the start (or acc) position for a few seconds before turning the key to turn the engine over?

Correct. if the fuel-pump is working properly, doing so in the ON position should spin it up and send fuel to the injectors.
