After much speculation, the high-power Volkswagen Golf R400 has been confirmed for production…again.
The car was already confirmed once before, but after that report came out it became clear that the R400 didn’t actually have the green light yet. That has now changed. “We have the Golf more sporty than ever before, since we soon will have the Golf R400 – we will do this car,” VW group powertrain chief Dr Heinz-Jakob Neusser told Car. “We are in fact in development of it right now.”
Power for this hyper hot hatch will come from a high-output turbocharged 2.0-liter engine that will make right around 400 hp, accelerating the small car from to 0 to 62 mph in around 3.9 seconds. Just like the VW Golf R, the R400 will be all-wheel drive. Of course, to go along with the added power, beefed up brakes will be added.
In terms of the looks, the R400 will set itself apart form other Golfs thanks to a new spoiler and a revised aero pack that includes bigger splitters and likely a few other added bits of bodywork.
The car is expected to make its debut at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show in September of this year. Pricing on the car will likely sit between $45,000 and $50,000, as the Golf R already tops out right at $40,000. This car will come to the U.S., as recently Neusser said that he would like to “show America how sporty the Golf can be.”
^What's crazy is the price, $50,000. I'd much rather have the CLA45 AMG for the same price. Its a great looking car and a lot more exclusive IMO. Not nearly as much trunk room as a Golf though.

yep, that's too high....you can even get a new C7 for $50K
don't know if this was posted anywhere but....due to VW's dieselgate issues.....
Golf R 400 has been cancelled
The Volkswagen Golf R 400 is dead. VW introduced the super-high-performance hatchback in concept form at the 2014 Beijing Motor Show, with backing from Volkswagen research-and-design boss Heinz-Jakob Neusser.
Things looked promising. The Golf R 400 got the green light and barely a year after debut, VW bosses approved it for American showrooms. But then the diesel emissions scandal happened, and like so many other higher ups at the German company, Neusser found himself unemployed. With his resignation, insiders told Automotive News that VW shelved the Golf R 400. But despite the scandal, the German company isn't abandoning a higher-performance Golf model – it's just rethinking it.
For one, the company – the greater Volkswagen Group, that is – is still working hard on a production version of the Golf R's 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder that could exceed 400 horsepower. If it makes production, it'd be under the hood of future Audi products, not VW ones, AN reports. But even though Volkswagen won't get the more potent EA888 engine, it may take a new approach to the Golf R.
Approach number one would breed a vehicle not all that different from today's Golf R. There'd be more power than today, but AN says it wouldn't be much more powerful than the current car. While this sounds delightful, we're more keen on the alternative plan, which would see engineers use lightweight materials to trim at least 300 pounds of body fat from the next-gen Golf R, due early next decade. This new model would weigh as much as today's GTI while also offering better power, handling, and braking.
