Default VW shows off a redesigned Tiguan at Frankfurt

VW unveiled a 2Gen Tiguan at the Frankfurt Auto Show. The first one, of course, has been around for some time.

http://www.autoblog.com/2015/09/15/v...#slide-3621843

After a long run, Volkswagen has finally retired the first-generation Tiguancrossover in favor of the larger, more chiseled second-generation model. The new compact is longer, wider, and lower than the more upright CUV that came before it. Yet, as we covered in our original post, the new Tig is also over 100 pounds lighter.

The bodywork is conservative but handsome; typical of newer VWs. We see plenty of Passat andTouareg in the fascia, which features a three-bar grille that integrates neatly with the slightly canted, rectangular headlights. The beltline looks higher than today's Tiguan, and sits below a more aggressive greenhouse, which is a welcomed change after the soft, crossovery looks of the last-gen model.

While VW has only released European powertrain options – there are eight engine options, split evenly between gas and diesel and boasting anywhere from 123 to 237 horsepower – we'll expect a far smaller roster for the US. Look for VW's familiar 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder to feature prominently in both front- and all-wheel-drive models, while we're personally hoping VW will see the light and offer a 2.0-liter TDI Tiguan.

Of course, there's more than just gas and diesel for the new Tiggy. The all-new GTE model promises plug-in capability. Expect 31 miles of electric range and 215 system horsepower. There are even solar panels on the roof which could generate up to an extra 600 miles per year of driving range.

Honestly looks like any other CUV, but to its credit it does look a little more masculine than the first generation with tauter lines

Hopefully they've finally got content, specs, and most importantly pricing, that is in line with the competitive set and where VW should be pricing (Not astronomically higher than everyone else). I think that most shoppers are now fairly entrenched within their favorite model, RAV4/CR-V/Escape/CX-5/Rogue/Tucson, etc. Tough to conquest them over.

But maybe VW can leverage the success of the newest Golf and gain some market share within the compact utility segment.

U.S. and China are supposedly getting a lengthened Tiguan, not the Euro spec shown here.

Yeah you never see the 1st gen Tiguan, guess it didn't sell AT ALL. Which is kind of crazy, this type of vehicle has been popular for 7-8 years now.

It sold somewhat in the D.C. region where I live (but, of course, almost anything sells in this area). Nationwide, though, no, it has not been a big seller.

Side profile looks like the X5 but with the creases and square angles, they made it look a lot like the Q7

I think it looks great, but that's likely top level trim.

While the Tiguan is not at all as popular as the RAV4 or CR-V here, I would not say that it is uncommon. But then, I do see one rather often; my wife's brother and sister-in-law own one.

An impulse buy, they discovered too late that it is expensive to operate (on top of being expensive to purchase); the fuel consumption of the 2-litre turbo-4 is quite high. They were forced to do some shuffling. They traded in the 20+ year old CR-V (finally had the opportunity) for a 2015 Corolla and now use the Corolla on the longer commute, where its excellent fuel economy ensures low fuel use and cheap fill-ups, while the Tiguan is used on the shorter commute; the Tiguan's fuel consumption is still high but the shorter commute means that it uses less fuel each week than it did when it was driven on the long daily commute.

CR-V debuted for the 97 model year i believe, so I don't think any are over 20 years old, unless you're just rounding

You are right. I was just guesstimating, based upon the (terrible) condition of that car.
