Tacoma. That name brings many things to mind: rails and sails, whitebark pine trees, Mt. Rainier, and the Pacific Northwest. That being said, you might think Toyota's new-for-2016 midsize pickup would be far away from home in Texas, a land of oil and gas and cowboy hats and boots.

It is simply mindbogging that the new 2016 has a c-channel frame.
Irony of it all, back in the 80s up until the mid 90s, Toyota trucks were all fully boxed while the domestics were C-channel.

That's true, but since those days, advances in metal alloys have allowed weight-saving C-channel frames to have adequate durability and stiffness. In fact, there have been even more metallurgical advancements just since 2006, when the full-size 2Gen Tundra debuted with a C-channel frame and had some rigidity problems.
