I was thinking the same thing. You have to declare it as $120,000 income on your federal return I think. And state return if your state does that.

Also growing up in the Bob Barker era, I remember all they gave away were domestic cars. Usually cheap, crappy ones. I can't tell you the number of POS Dodge Neons, Cavaliers, and Escorts they gave away back in the mid-late 90's. I wonder why they changed their policy??

On TPIR, the value of the merchandise you pay tax on isn't the same as what it might be at a car dealership, especially after negotiating. TPIR winners pay tax on the manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP), which is generally a great deal higher than one would pay on the free market.

TPIR will only ship your prizes to your home. If you want to have an item shipped to an alternate address, you must pay that cost.

I'm not expert on Aston Martin depreciation but I assume it's already lost 10-20% of its value. She should sell it immediately and get the max dollars she can from it.

I wonder if a rare car being won on "The Price Is Right" would add any value down the road, if it does for someone who can park/store it for free I would keep it, barely drive it, and sell it in 20 or 30 years. I never understood how a game show can give away all those expensive prizes and then the winners are nailed with having to pay taxes on them because of our screwed up tax laws, the game show should pay the taxes too on the prizes they give away or give the winner a cash value for the car if they can't afford the taxes.

Easy work-around. If she's an every-day blue-collar American like a lot of people, go to the credit union or bank immediately, get a small personal loan to cover taxes and insurance for about 60 days and then sell the car. The bank has a guaranteed quick pay-back and you leave with a ****-ton of cash (and a boosted FICO with the loan pay-off). Even if a dealer, personal buyer and insurance stick it to you, you still come out MILES ahead.
Then buy a new car well within your newfound means.

Yeah you'd scrape the front end right off that car with some of those San Francisco hills and driveway entrances. Probably have some crazy hippie throw red paint all over the car and start screaming vulgarities at you for killing baby seals with that gas guzzling playboy capitalist pig of a car.

Seriously though, you probably would get dirty looks driving an Aston Martin in certain areas of San Fran.
