Announced today at the New York Auto Show, Toyota and Lexus will make standard their already-available basic safety package options in 25 of 30 models by the end of 2017. The models that won’t be fitted with the standard safety systems are the Lexus GX, Toyota Mirai, 4Runner, and 86, and Scion iA. However both the Mirai and iA already come standard with AEB.
Why will these models not have standard safety systems:
  • Lexus GX & Toyota 4Runner: Scheduled to be replaced in 2018/2019?
  • Toyota Mirai: Old platform about to be obsoleted (non-TNGA platform)?
  • Toyota 86: Subaru platform and drivetrain that would require Subaru safety system?
  • Scion iA / Toyota Yaris iA: Mazda platform and drivetrain that would require Mazda safety system?

Might as well. May be more cost efficient to produce cars with less variation across the board.

But we'll see how base prices will change for all of their models.

I considered the GX while shopping for a SUV last month. Automatic breaking was one of the features I wanted. For this reason, I passed on the GX and got a GLE.

Or they plan to keep those models longer.

Currently those vehicles except for 86 have different system, not the TSS/TSS+. Not sure about 4Runner. Yaris iA has AEB City standard but it is not same system.

Nobody has affordable good working system for $300-$500 like Toyota. They are leaders in that field. And nobody will have standard systems in 2017, not with these features. Germans have standard basic AEB City in luxury cars in Europe (some countries only) but to get to these levels of features you have to pay extra $2000-$3500 depending on vehicle.

Honda started following this with their own affordable system, but it is not only a year late but also 3x-4x more expensive (still half of the price of other manufacturers).

yeah gx has ancient trim level designations so to get what is now basic safety stuff like adaptive cruise you have to find one (good luck) or order one with the $4340 'driver support package'.
