Failing automatic transmissions that are electrically-controlled usually programmed to default to second gear. That allows you to start from a stop (albeit with some strain on the engine first starting up), and still drive on the road at a low speed to a repair shop...or a junkyard.Of course, at that time (1986) GM may not have yet switched to electronically controlled transmissions yet.....I don't remember.

BTW...though your stepmother (and Hillary LOL) may have driven one, I still don't consider that an "old-ladies" car. In most cases, I simply don't believe in automatic stereotypes. I've seen older women driving Corvettes, and men driving pastel-colored Beetle convertibles.
