This may help you. This is River Rd where the Volt made the left, the BMW was oncoming from up that hill around the bend. This is from the main road lane, but you can see the issue. Remember, at night, you see just headlights up around that bend...how do you realize in a split second the oncoming car is traveling nearly 3 times as fast as you would expect it to be?

Generally when making a left turn you're not supposed to make split second decisions. You're must judge oncoming car's distance and speed and proceed when its safe. Unfortunately there are too many drivers that just glance and proceed judging only the distance without considering speed.

if you were in that car at the time on that deserted stretch of vermont interstate 91 you'd have had a great time. and by 165 i mean i very briefly reached 165 before promptly and firmly braking back down to a reasonable 75. the whole ordeal took maybe 20 seconds. it wasn't like i was doing 165 for 20 miles straight...

The BMW slammed the volt doing 75mph, so it means it slowed down 40mph from 115mph to 75mph. I'm not an expert on physics or math, but it seems to me that even if BMW was traveling just a bit over the 45mph limit, say 65mph, it might still have been a close call or even a minor accident.
When it comes to left turns, there are too many drivers that simply don't pay attention and can't judge speed or distance. Just ask motorcycle riders what they think about that.

It's entirely possible that he would have still hit them slowing from an easy 75.

In reality that intersection needs a traffic signal. It's not a very busy interchange though.
How many times have you yourself made that exact left turn? I think it's never.

OK....I see what you mean. Yes, BMW has done that before.....offered vehicles with M-chassis components and non-M powerplants. An old colleague of mine had one of the old 540s with the M-chassis (M-Sport) package.
