DETROIT -- A fire at Ford’s world headquarters on Monday is forcing the company to delay the release of October sales results for the U.S. until later in the week.

The fire at an electrical substation interrupted power at the Dearborn, Mich., headquarters and nearby Ford Credit office buildings, as well as to one of Ford’s main data centers that the company and dealers use to report and track U.S. deliveries, Ford said late Monday.

"While battery backups worked as intended to protect data saved in the system, the lack of full power resulted in the data center being shut down for most of Monday’s business day, and dealers were unable to report final-day sales," Ford said in a statement.

Automakers are scheduled to release U.S. sales results for October on Tuesday.Analysts polled by Bloomberg expect Ford's U.S. sales to decline 11 percent in October amid an overall decline in industry volume. The company said its monthly U.S. sales conference call for media and analysts will resume with November’s sales report on Dec. 1.

Ford was forced to evacuate the headquarters early Monday because of the fire that started in the basement.

A Ford spokesman said a fire started in an electrical substation below the 12-story building. Firefighters contained the flames after the building’s electrical power was shut off, the spokesman said in an update at 10:40 a.m. Eastern.

No injuries were reported. At noon, Ford said evacuated employees were being sent home for the rest of the day.

The building, known locally as the “Glass House,” opened in 1956. It is scheduled for major renovations beginning in 2021.

David Phillips and John Irwin contributed to this report.

Let me get this straight. A Fortune 10 company with $150B in annual revenue doesn't have backup generators for their headquarters or primary datacenter? I had both before we hit $50M.

Interesting question. It also makes me suspect that some disgruntled employees (or ex-employees) did it deliberately because of Ford dumping their jobs on the big Focus production shift to Mexico. Get employees mad, and hit their bread-and-butter, and you have no idea what can happen. The Ford spokesperson may (?) have used the substation excuse as a cover-up....although most cases are examined and reported on by a trained fire-investigator.

Also, even without the fire, it would probably have been too early today to compile all the October statistics anyway, since some Ford dealers were open yesterday, and selling cars right up through yesterday evening.

  • Buick U.S. retail sales up 7 percent for best October since 2003
  • GMC sets brand’s all-time record for October ATP at $43,988
DETROIT – General Motors (NYSE: GM) sold 208,290 vehicles in October to individual or “retail” customers in the U.S., up 3 percent from last year, despite two fewer selling days. Based on initial estimates, GM outperformed the entire U.S. retail industry by a wide margin.

Led by Chevrolet and Buick, GM’s U.S. retail market share rose to its highest October level since 2009. Based on initial estimates, GM’s retail market share jumped 1.6 percentage points in October to 18.1 percent, the largest retail market share gain of any manufacturer. Chevrolet’s October U.S. retail sales were up 6 percent compared to last year, the brand’s best October since 2004. Buick’s October U.S. retail sales were up 7 percent, the brand’s best October since 2003.

Chevrolet gained 1.4 percentage points of U.S. retail market share in October to 12.3 percent. Chevrolet has gained U.S. retail market share in 9 out of 10 months this year, and remains the industry’s fastest-growing full-line brand. Buick gained 0.2 percentage points of retail market share in October.

In addition, GMC set an all-time October record for the brand’s ATP or Average Transaction Price of $43,988, up more than $1,800 over last October’s performance.

“GM’s October performance reflects the strength of our retail business and our operating discipline. We gained profitable retail share in October while spending less than the industry average on incentives and commanding the industry’s best average transaction prices for any full-line automaker,” said Kurt McNeil, GM’s vice president of U.S. sales operations. “We will continue our disciplined approach and focus on retail in a strong industry.”

In October, GM’s incentive spending as a percent of ATP was 11.7 percent, below the industry average of 11.8 percent.

GM’s ATPs, which reflect retail transaction prices after sales incentives, were $36,155 in October, more than $4,650 above the industry average and more than $1,000 above last October’s performance.

Year to date, Buick retail deliveries have grown nearly 4 percent and Buick has gained 0.1 percentage points of retail share.

GM continues to benefit from a strong U.S. economy.“Key fundamentals like job security, rising personal incomes, low fuel prices and low interest rates continue to provide the environment for a very healthy U.S. auto industry,” said Mustafa Mohatarem, GM’s chief economist. “The U.S. auto industry is well positioned for sales to continue at or near record levels for the foreseeable future.”

Audi of America sets new October record on SUV strength and sedan demand
November 01, 2016 HERNDON, Virginia
  • Record sales streak extends to 70 consecutive months
  • Q3 sales more than doubled in October
  • A4 sedan bucks industry trend, with 33 percent gain
Audi of America said its October sales increased 0.1 percent to 17,721 deliveries. The all-new A4 and Q7 led the gains and the Q3 continued to attract new consumers to the brand.

October 2016 marks the 70th consecutive month of record sales for Audi of America. Year-to-date sales have risen 2.9 percent to 169,900, as the brand remains on pace to top last year’s record sales in advance of its largest new-product cadence over the next 3 years.

Sales of Audi SUV models remained steady with an 8.4 percent increase over last October and a 17 percent increase year-to-date. The A4 sedan bolstered October results, posting sales of 3,864 vehicles, countering a trend in the U.S. market away from sedans.

“We are well-positioned going into the holidays and our upcoming Season of Audi sales event,” said Mark Del Rosso, chief operating officer, Audi of America. “Thanks to the enthusiasm of our dealers and the success of our product strategy, 2016 should go down as another record year. The new A4 and Q7 are helping us win in the face of a tightening premium market and position us well for continued growth in 2017.”

The Q5 remained the brand’s volume SUV, with 3,772 vehicles sold. Sales of the Q3 SUV rose to 1,944, a 119 percent gain from last October and sales of the new Q7 rose 33 percent to 2,798.
