Why do you think this is a "racket"?!? Why do you care if PA or NY is getting the sales tax as long as you are only paying one sales tax?

it would be "a racket" if you had to pay PA sales tax for buying the car there, and NY sales tax for registering the car there...but thats not the case. States have agreed to collect sales tax where the car is garaged to protect each state from large out of state purchases, such as cars. If that wasn't the case all of us would buy cars in DE where there is no sales tax. You can understand why MD, VA, DC and PA don't want that.

I remember growing up in CT and my friend's dad was the ceo of a co. and his car had NY tags registered to the home office in St. Louis. Maybe this wouldn't fly today, but maybe it would. The car was 24/7/365 in CT, but avoided paying CT "property" tax which is annual and based on the value (I think MA, NH, VA do this). Would seem it's an evasion of property tax and likely sales tax as well (car was picked up in Hartford, CT). This was the first time I became aware that it's possible to register a car in a state that doesn't match the plates. Didn't someone here point out MT is like that for exotic cars? Or, was it just that people had bogus addresses in MT and got the plates....

This still flies, and you see it all the time. Most common here is cars with DE plates because the family has a beach house in DE and they make that their primary residence to avoid sales tax.

If the car is in CT but is registered in MO, it would have MO tags.

IMO it is a racket because I simply don't believe it's any of the state's business where one buys their car, as long as the owner pays the required registration/title fees to properly register the car in that state. You are free to disagree......but that is my view.

States have agreed to collect sales tax where the car is garaged to protect each state from large out of state purchases, such as cars.
See, that's where I believe the problem is. Why should a state be "protected" from out-of-state sales? If they keep their own sales tax-rates down, then that will be an incentive to buy in that state....Delaware, as you note, is a good example. But to make underhanded agreements with other surrounding states is, IMO, collusion and price-fixing (price-fixing, of course, in the form of taxes). States themselves prosecute business for doing that.

If that wasn't the case all of us would buy cars in DE where there is no sales tax. You can understand why MD, VA, DC and PA don't want that.
Sure. Why allow someone to actually have a break when you can all get together and figure out a common way into their pocket?

Of course, it also has to be taken into account that one might not to want to drive all the way back from DE, either....it's a good 150 miles from my house.

Anyhow, if we disagree....fine. I respect your view, but IMO it is a racket.

If people don't want to pay sales taxes on cars and want to buy cars in DE, they can move to Delaware. In any event they do have a special tax on car sales. They aren't tax free.

There are other taxes in DE for instance that make up for the fact that they don't have a state sales tax. DE residents pay them, people who just buy stuff in DE don't pay them, they just benefit from the lack of a sales tax. How is that fair?

I don't see the issue at all with expecting people to pay sales tax on a big purchase like this in the state where they reside. That's a big part of the states tax revenue. Want a different setup? Move to another state.

People do dumb stuff......like driving all over VA, filling up a van with cartons of smokes, and taking the eye 80 back to NYC and getting pulled over....dumb. Felony. The story I remember reading about, the dude had like 900+ cartons that would have yielded him a $70k profit. Felony for 70k? Not even for 7 mil. would I do it. nein danke. Taxes are a civic duty. Nobody likes them. Just pay them and know it was your duty, move on.....(that dude in PA who paid $15k of property tax in loose change and youtube'd it? get outta here, that's despicable taking it out on a clerk)

Remember that guy in NYC a couple of years ago that got wrestled down to the ground by several cops....and died? His (supposed) crime?....selling bootleg cigarettes on the sidewalk.

Back on topic, did anyone actually find an updated list of No-Haggle Lexus shops? I searched a number of places, even on the Lexus web site, and didn't actually see a list of them.

I actually am getting tons of emails and phone calls right now from Tampa to Orlando area dealerships (prolly over 60)......what I am seeing is say the actual website shows list price--they emailed me the same thing, only say $3,500 discount, and this is on nx200t's listing for as little as 39k. Not 100% certain but some of these dealers I think are no haggle, dunno what the clue is....

I don't believe the emails have been initiated by a person, although the phone calls are the internet mgrs....now that I think about it, why didn't my dad consider one? Well he wanted to buy the Envision, I guess he didn't want a Lexus, he wanted a Buick or a Civic, and Honda wouldn't play the remove your fees game....

edit ok no dealer in FLA is on that list, so they are not no haggle. Nice, take the email and try for $5k off...that's what I would do...

My buddy and his wife were buying a new Lexus this weekend and they live in Tampa, problem was they didn't know in advance what car, they were thinking RX450h CPO, and there was only 1 available used with 6k, and ask was $48k, significantly lower than most including PA, and clean carfax so he figured something was up. They drove it and immediately wifey no likey, wasn't impressed with the car or price tag its looks or interior (coming from a Q5 2.0T)....suddenly she liked the nx200t. So he texted me can you get me some info....prices and incentives? I already agreed I'd have my laptop and hotspot, and I was in a child's playground...4G was not working so luckily the open/free wifi was working. He texted me anything yet, I'm flying blind bro!! Anyway I saw up here in PA the discounts right off the bat were up to $4050, but down there only $2600. Anyway they got about $4100 off and took the car home. I ended up clicking a bunch of cars on edmunds to reveal the prices. Still getting calls and emails as of yesterday evening, figure this will go on for 6-12 mos.....

I love the lines, I have sent you numerous emails, just wanted to be sure you got them, is this the best email? What is your preferred method of communication? My preferred method of communication, is, by fist bumps. Please advise...no response...

Dag Lexus is putting cheap tires on the nxt, has tires with a B traction rating, in 2017? Yokos. Seriously, on a premium car, I assume that cars all have A A or AA A ratings nowadays. I mean utqg is self-reported anyway, like EPA numbers, so if someone self reports a B, imho that's a fail....

edit p.s. on a different thread I had said the premium Buick Envision had Kumhos, I was wrong, it has Hankooks....and believe it or not, those Hankooks cost more than Michelin Premier LTXs....which the base model comes with (those are not cheap tires, my wife has them on her SUV and we bought them at Costco)

Curious why she didn't like the rx450h? what year was it? Assume not current gen.
i drove a 2010 or 2011 i think a few years back... didn't really like how it drove or the noises. I was disappointed.

It was a '16 because she wanted the newer styling...$48k seems to be a low price as it had only 6k miles...she likely was comparing it to the Q5, which obviously an nx200t won't quite compare with either, but they said it's more modern and acceptable to them....but at least the nxt is made in Japan which I'd like to think is a plus....but B traction rated Yokos is a disappointment, I understand the Dunlops would have had a A traction...Bridgestones also B.....

p.s. getting more calls and emails all day, 3 emails from one dealership today hahahahahaha I wonder if that tactic works?
