And the IS and GS were just refreshed. What more refreshes has the IS gotten over the GS?

Purely cosmetic but they did get a bigger screen and a more in your face grill. It also seems the sales haven't fallen off a cliff like the GS. No real drastic changes though. If the GS had more changes than the IS, then I may be wrong in this assumption.

Traditionally, these luxury models have a fairly consistent 7 year model cycle.
Thus, while the older 2012-19 4GS has to compete against the new 2016-23 E Class, a fresher 2013-20 3IS gets to compete against a barely newer 2014-21 C Class.
That's why GS has a big fall off in sales compared to IS.
The other reason why GS volumes low is because of the midsize front drive based ES.

I agree with everything you said. I will add that not having an AWD options on the ES also migrates people to the RX. But the NX and RX are closer to cars than they are suvs.

Typo, Jill?........I think you meant the RX. The GX is a redone Toyota Prado......a body-on-frame truck platform.

Yeah the GX is about as far from a car as you can get.

News from Australia!

Looks like I was right about the GS going upmarket and becoming a CLS/A7/6 GC fighter :

Lexus backs GS, future large liftback likely

GS will likely be replaced by swoopier coupe-like Lexus liftback

9 Jun 2017

By DANIEL DEGASPERI

LEXUS Australia chief executive Peter McGregor has rejected reports that the next-generation GS large car has been cancelled, pointing instead to a possible evolution of the traditional sedan into a more fashionable coupe-style model.

A report from Japanese magazine MagX earlier this year quoted an internal Lexus source saying that the next-generation GS had been cancelled, however that appears to be incorrect, according to Mr McGregor.

“I think it (new GS) would still be a four-door sedan in terms of its application, but the exterior styling may appear to be more liftback,” he told GoAuto at the national media launch of the Lexus LC in Tyabb, Victoria, this week.

“I’m not saying anything about the future, I’m just saying if you … want to talk about how we’re going to reinvigorate the sedan market, I think you can probably take a clue from the design of the next-generation LS.

“The styling of the vehicle is very much moving from a traditional three-box sedan, if you will, to more of a liftback body style. And I think that that change will actually add great appeal to the sedan market.”

makes sense. bringing the gs DOWNMARKET with the gs200t was about the worst thing they could have done with the es having the v6. it needs to be a7 / cls competitor.

Sounds like the new competition to the new 6series GT previously the 5seriesGT, which sells in tiny #s and is very ugly.

I prefer they kept it a regular Sport Sedan. I mean this is Lexus - how they cant make a better RWD sedan than the Genesis G80 is both sad and mind boggling.

The market is still there - Eclass, 5series, A6, Genesis all sell in solid #s.
Disappointing that they are giving up.

I read it differently, as being competition for the A7, 6 Series Grand Coupe, and CLS. That is a significant move upscale from the GS and fits with the LS500 being moved upscale.

How is the LS more upscale now? Its the only car in segment without V8 - if anything its no longer competing with the big dogs.

CLS, 6 GC, A7 are fashion statements where styling, badge and HP supercede everything else.
It would be difficult for GS to get traction here imo.

My comment about the LS moving upscale is related to the new car is only available in the long wheelbase similar to the LS460L with no availability of the standard length car. Pricing will also follow so there will be no more $75,000 list prices. For most luxury buyers, it should compete well with the 7 and the A8. The S class is still a significant step up.

The GS as currently constituted can't compete with the CLS, A7, or 6GC, but the new car described above is a different animal. New chassis based on LS/LC design, new engine(s), and a fastback coupe like style could make it competitive. It depends on how well Lexus handles the design of the new car.

I would have hoped Lexus made a competitive proper sedan so they wouldn't have to take an extreme measure like this. BMW, Mercedes, and Audi all have success with their middle sedans. Now if they do go this route, it's going to leave a hole in their line-up. A better outcome would have been keep the GS as-is AND add a swoopier version. Audi checks all those boxes and it works.
