Default Infiniti reinvents gasoline engine

This could be a huge moment in the automotive world. Infiniti, an automaker not exactly known for leading the way in game-changing innovation, has revealed their groundbreaking new engine design featuring a system that allows on-the-fly combustion ratio changes, something that, as far as I have seen, has never been done.

If one couldn't adjust the intake charge by varying the intake valve timing I could see how this could be very useful--ultrahigh compression under part throttle (BMEP below the detonation limit) for efficiency, but low compression under full throttle (BMEP still below the detonation limit).

But with the Atkinson engine (variable intake valve timing) one can have a very high built-in expansion ratio and simply adjust the valve timing to keep BMEP under control. So to my eyes, this complexity wouldn't be necessary.

The engine cycle seems to work pretty well, it gets 31 highway mpg and 27 combined while producing more power and torque than NX300 or Q5. The overall package looks very good besides, being slightly larger than either the NX or Q5. The top interior looks fantastic. Alex on Autos has a preliminary test on you tube.

I'm skeptical. 27% more efficient than a 3.7L V6. Uhhh, yeah, downsizing by 1.7 liters will do that.

The extra complexity is concerning.

Honestly. I can’t honestly say I really care. But I am sure it’s great technology. I would not worry about the reliability.

Actuator and electric motor what could be bad about that?

Reducing my snarkyness, what actual did Infiiniti implement in regards to service intervals? Like extra low oil changes, frequent checkups/service schedule, and whats the useable life on the motor and actuator not to forget when it does go how easy is the repair and is their a limp home mode designed to prevent damage or drive failure if stuck in one mode or the other?

As has the RX, again since 2007. The 2018 has the same engine making the same 268hp as my wife's 2007. Just sad.

im wondering where the oil pan is on this type of engine that is taller than a normal engine. Or is the linkage housing the oil pan itself?

Not according to Lexus: http://www.lexus.com/models/RX/specifications

2018 Lexus RX350 - Luxury Crossover - Specifications
Torque @ RPM
268 lb-ft @ 4,700

Edit: Wikipedia says you're right, and it's now a 295hp 2GR-FKS. Lexus might want to update their own materials.

Edit2: Never mind, I was looking at the Torque value. HP figures are in a picture that didn't load in my primary browser due to a popup blocker.

^^ The Lexus site link you posted shows 295 hp. It appears up to date to me.
