no manufacturer has a completely consistent 'makes sense' naming scheme. an lc500 is a lot smaller than a gs350

Agreed, but at least there you have a model designator. If all Lexus models were LSXXX, and the flagship was an LS350 while the car we know as the IS was the LS500, then we'd be in the same realm of stupidity as Infiniti was. I'll admit that I did not notice that the QX70 listed for sale on Infiniti's website was the 2017 model, so at least their issue has corrected itself.

Anyway, we're digressing. Back to the QX50.

Saw a QX50 today. Great design! Don’t know how this thing could possibly be considered an SUV. Beautiful white/cream interior.

It is very weird. First Infiniti had the QX30, which is still on sale but being discontinued. It was completely based on the Mercedes GLA, sharing the chassis, engine and drivetrain - just reskinned with Infiniti styling. Now this QX50 with almost identical specs, but based on Nissan's own platform, with their own engine that has the same displacement and output as the Mercedes engine. They are equally craptastic inside and out, despite QX50 being substantially more expensive.
