Mercedes styling of their sedans just doesn't sit well with me anymore. In general, I like their coupes, but there is not one sedan that I like.

Styling features (also known as "design language" or "form vocabulary"), such as sharp creases, floating roofline and the Bangle Butt, are dictated by fashion trends. Fashion trends come and go. Sharp bodyside creases as a styling feature is coming to an end.

Previewed in sculpture form in January, the Concept A sedan was revealed at the 2017 Shanghai auto show. It shows off the brand’s simplified “sensual purity” form vocabulary; the corporate press release quotes Daimler design chief Gorden Wagener saying, “the time of creases is over.” The notchback profile portends a sedan body style for the next-generation A-class, which likely will sell alongside the next-gen CLA four-door coupe.

For me, the last great Mercedes coupe was the C215 CL.
Ah, the "worn bar of soap" look... This is how they described the original Ford Taurus. It sold well for a while (best-selling midsize sedan in the USA before the Toyota Camry grabbed that title) but that fashion trend also had its limited run.

mercedes is intentionally going for the blob look right now.

The new design language is to reduce lines.

Was actually expecting 3rd gen to be a nice improvement but aesthetically I think its a step backward.

The 2nd gen CLS had great presence.

Agreed. The 2nd gen looked much better. Still looks good. This new one is "meh".

Yes, so this does have the new inline 6 and 48v system. However, it isn't available for sale until fall of 2018, 1 year from now. Makes sense since other 2018 models have yet to receive this new engine set up. They debuted this one kind of early.

Something not mentioned here is that it its a 5 seater now.

The CLS is a niche seller even at the best of times. It barely sells in the hundreds every month. I think it's odd that it's marketed as a four door coupe when it's a contradiction in terms. It's just a sedan with a swoopy fastback style. Technically it's a four door fastback more than a coupe. The 1st generation looked good for what it was and then the update was just silly with that weird bulge over the rear wheel well that never worked for me.

This 2018... I can't decide if the butt lift is a fix for the droopy rear end of the previous cars or just trying to blend in more. Dunno. If I want a coupe, I'll just get a coupe, what's with the extra doors? You force rear seat passengers to duck and weave like Ali vs Frazier just to get in and out of the thing.

Why is this car still being sold? I thought since the AMG GT43 4-door was announced, it would replace the CLS. Turns out it's still being sold next year but with MBUX:

https://media.mbusa.com/releases/rel...ystem-for-2021

This gen of the CLS was a huge flop. Les than a 1000 units sold each year since it came out in 2018. Meanwhile, the AMG GT 4-door sold over 4000 units in the past year alone, and that volume will go up even more next year with the cheaper GT43. Personally, I much prefer how the CLS looks compared to the GT 4-door, but It makes zero financial sense to keep it alive.
