Chevrolet’s Retail Sales Outperform the Industry

Retail Crossover Sales Soar at Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick and GMC; Commercial and Government deliveries up sharply

2017-12-01
DETROIT — General Motors (NYSE: GM) today reported 245,387 deliveries in the United States in November, with large year-over-year increases in sales of Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick and GMC crossovers to individual “retail” customers.
  • Chevrolet crossovers were up 16 percent, driven by a 59 percent increase for the Traverse, which had its best November retail and total sales ever. The Bolt EV had its best month yet.
  • The Cadillac XT5 was up 11 percent.
  • Buick crossovers were up 20 percent after Enclave deliveries more than doubled. Envision deliveries were up 2 percent.
  • Buick’s new Avenir premium sub-brand is off to a strong start. About 30 percent of 2018 Enclave deliveries are Avenir models.
  • GMC crossovers were up 11 percent, driven by a 4 percent increase for the Acadia and a 20 percent increase for the Terrain, which gained a full point of segment share month over month as availability grew.
Overall retail sales were essentially equal to last November. Commercial and government deliveries were up a combined 7 percent, driven by a 30 percent increase in full-size pickup sales and a 35 percent increase for the Chevrolet Tahoe PPV (Police Pursuit Vehicle). Total fleet sales were down 13 percent after a 24 percent reduction in daily rental deliveries. Total sales were down 3 percent.

Crossovers, strong SUV sales and a record November for GMC Denali sales helped the company’s average transaction prices (ATPs) surpass $37,000 for the first time ever. GM’s ATPs were about $4,500 above the industry average and nearly $2,000 higher than any domestic competitor.
Chevrolet Momentum

Retail sales for Chevrolet were up 2 percent year over year, while the retail industry is expected to be up about 1 percent. It was Chevrolet’s best retail November performance since 2004.

The brand’s strong year-over-year retail performance extended to passenger cars, SUVs and pickups, which helped the brand outperform the industry:
  • Colorado deliveries were up 18 percent for its best November ever.
  • The Tahoe and Suburban were up a combined 12 percent.
  • Chevrolet passenger cars were up 1 percent, with the Corvette, SS, Impala, Sonic and Spark all posting sharply higher sales.
Strong Economic and Sales Outlook

“More vehicles are sold in December than any other month and we are very well positioned because we have momentum in so many segments, but especially in crossovers,” said Kurt McNeil, U.S. vice president of Sales Operations. “When we close the books on 2017, GM will show very healthy inventory levels, significantly lower daily rental sales for the third year in row, and the best year in our history for crossover deliveries by far.”

“U.S. economic growth has stepped up and we expect the momentum will carry over to 2018,” added GM Chief Economist Mustafa Mohatarem. “Employment continues to grow at a solid pace, wage growth will accelerate and consumer confidence just hit a 17-year high, so industry sales should remain strong.”
Other November Highlights

  • GM’s ATPs were up more than $650 from October and more than $1,400 from a year ago.
  • GM is on track to close 2017 with significantly fewer vehicles in stock than it had in December 2016.
  • GM’s November incentive spending was an estimated 12.9 percent of ATP, per JD Power PIN, which is in line with the industry average. Spending was down 0.3 percentage points from October and 0.8 points year over year.
General Motors Co. (NYSE:GM) has leadership positions in the world's largest and fastest-growing automotive markets. GM, its subsidiaries and joint venture entities sell vehicles under the Chevrolet, Cadillac, Baojun, Buick, GMC, Holden, Jiefang, and Wuling brands. • Chrysler brand sales up 14 percent; Chrysler Pacifica minivan posts best sales month ever
  • Sales of all-new Jeep® Compass up 34 percent; best ever November sales

December 1, 2017 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - FCA US LLC today reported sales of 154,919 units, a 4 percent decrease compared with sales in November 2016 (160,827 units).

In November, retail sales of 129,539 units were up 2 percent compared with the same month in 2016 and represented 84 percent of total sales. In line with FCA’s strategy to reduce sales to the daily rental segment, fleet sales of 25,380 units were down, as expected, 25 percent year over year. The largest planned volume reduction in November fleet sales came from the Jeep® brand, which reduced its fleet sales number by 75 percent year over year. Fleet sales represented 16 percent of total FCA US November sales.

The Chrysler Pacifica minivan and the all-new Jeep Compass each posted record sales in November. Pacifica sales were up 51 percent for its best sales month ever, while Compass sales increased 34 percent for its best November sales ever. The Jeep Grand Cherokee recorded its best November sales since 2003. Other FCA US vehicles posting year-over-year sales increases in the month of November were the Chrysler 300, Fiat 500L, Jeep Cherokee, Jeep Wrangler, Dodge Grand Caravan, Dodge Durango and Ram ProMaster City.

Chrysler Brand
Chrysler brand sales were up 14 percent in November, compared with the same month a year ago. Both the Chrysler Pacifica minivan and the Chrysler 300 full-size sedan posted sales increases in November. Pacifica sales were up 51 percent, the minivan’s best sales month ever. Green Car Reports named the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid as the 2018 Best Car to Buy. Its sister publication, The Car Connection, named the Pacifica as the 2018 Best Minivan to Buy. Sales of the 300 were up 15 percent in November, its best November sales since 2015. The 300 won the Large Car segment in Edmunds’ Most Wanted awards last month. This recognition honors the most in-demand vehicles based on sales, days-to-turn and shopper interest data on the Edmunds website.

Jeep Brand
Sales of the all-new Jeep Compass increased 34 percent for its best November sales ever. The Jeep Wrangler, Jeep Cherokee and Jeep Grand Cherokee each posted year-over-year sales increases. The Grand Cherokee turned in its best November sales since 2003. In addition, Jeep brand retail sales were up 13 percent in November, compared with the same month a year ago. The Jeep brand earlier this week introduced the next-generation 2018 Jeep Wrangler at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The all-new Wrangler – the most capable and recognized vehicle in the world – builds on its legendary history with an unmatched combination of off-road capability, open-air freedom, advanced fuel-efficient powertrains, authentic Jeep design, superior on- and off-road dynamics, and a host of innovative safety and advanced technology features.

Dodge Brand
Sales of the Dodge Grand Caravan and the Dodge Durango SUV were up year over year in November. Grand Caravan sales increased 28 percent last month, while the Durango posted a 9 percent increase, compared with the same month a year ago. The Dodge brand announced last month that it has begun shipping the 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon – the most powerful muscle car in history – to its Dodge dealers in the U.S.

The Ram Truck brand last month unveiled its new, special-edition 2018 Ram 1500 Hydro Blue Sport. The Hydro Blue Sport will be the final special-edition Sport the brand will offer in the 2017 calendar year. Previously, Ram launched Sublime (Green) and Copper Sport limited-edition trucks earlier this year and an Ignition Orange edition in late 2016.

FIAT Brand
Sales of the Fiat 500L increased 32 percent last month for its best November sales since 2015.

Alfa Romeo Brand
Alfa Romeo brand sales of 1,440 units were up significantly compared with the same month a year ago as the launch of the all-new 2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio SUV continues in U.S. dealerships. Earlier this week, the editors of Motor Trend named the Alfa Romeo Giulia as its 2018 Car of the Year, best representing exceptional value, superiority in its class and impact on the automotive scene.

Method of Determining FCA US LLC’s Monthly Sales. FCA US’s reported vehicle sales represent unit sales of vehicles to retail customers, deliveries of vehicles to fleet customers and to others such as FCA US’s employees and retirees as well as vehicles used for marketing. Most of these reported sales reflect retail sales made by dealers out of their own inventory of vehicles previously purchased by them from FCA US. Reported vehicle units sales do not correspond to FCA US’s reported revenues, which are based on FCA US’s sale and delivery of vehicles, and typically recognized upon shipment to the dealer or end customer. As announced on July 26, 2016, FCA US has modified its methodology for monthly sales reporting as follows:
  • Sales to retail customers by dealers in the U.S. are derived from the New Vehicle Delivery Report (“NVDR”) system and are determined as the sum of (A) all sales recorded by dealers during the month net of all unwound transactions recorded to the end of that month (whether the original sale was recorded in the current month or any prior month); plus (B) all sales of vehicles during that month attributable to past unwinds that had previously been reversed in determining monthly sales (in the current or prior months).
  • Fleet sales are recorded upon the shipment of the vehicle by FCA US to the customer or end user.
  • Other retail sales are recorded either (A) when the sale is recorded in the NVDR system (for sales by dealers in Puerto Rico and limited sales made through distributors that submit NVDRs in the same manner as for sales by U.S. dealers) or (B) upon receipt of a similar delivery notification (for vehicles for which NVDRs are not entered such as vehicles for FCA employees).

SUBARU OF AMERICA, INC. REPORTS RECORD NOVEMBER SALES

  • Record November - monthly sales increase 0.8 percent over November 2016
  • 72 consecutive months of yearly month-over-month growth
  • Best November ever for Crosstrek, Forester and Impreza
  • 45 consecutive months of more than 10,000 Outbacks sold
  • 52 consecutive months of more than 10,000 Foresters sold
Subaru of America, Inc. today reported 51,721 vehicle sales for November 2017, a 0.8 percent increase over November 2016. The automaker also reported year-to-date sales of 584,614 vehicles, a 5.9 percent gain over the same period in 2016.

November marked the 45th consecutive month of 40,000+ vehicle sales and the 72nd consecutive month of yearly month-over-month growth for the company. Crosstrek, Forester and Impreza were notably strong as each model achieved its best November ever. BRZ also enjoyed strong gains over November 2016.

Furthering optimism around the brand, Subaru debuted its all-new, three-row,
2019 Ascent SUV at a press event prior to the Los Angeles Auto Show earlier this week. Ascent production will begin at the Subaru of Indiana, Inc. assembly plant in Lafayette, Indiana in May 2018 and will be sold exclusively in the North American market starting in summer 2018.

Moving into the final month of the year, the Subaru
Share the Love event will run through January 2, 2018. Subaru of America will donate $250 for every new Subaru vehicle sold or leased to the customer's choice of the following charities: The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals® (ASPCA®), Make-A-Wish ®, Meals on Wheels America and National Park Foundation, or a hometown charity selected by participating Subaru retailers.

“With the continuation of our annual Share the Love event, and December typically being one of the best retail sales months of the year, the Subaru franchise is in a great position to achieve its ninth consecutive all-time sales record in 2017,” said Jeff Walters, senior vice president of sales, Subaru of America, Inc.

“Coming off the recent 2018 ALG Residual Value Awards (RVA), we are very pleased that our brand and products are receiving recognition and contributing to our ongoing success,” said Thomas J. Doll, president and COO of Subaru of America, Inc. As ALG noted, “Awards across sportscar, traditional passenger car and utility segments display the depth of the Subaru vehicle portfolio.”

For the 3rd year in a row, Subaru was honored with the “Best Overall Mainstream Brand”
Residual Value Award from ALG , the analytics division of TrueCar Inc. and the industry benchmark for projecting future vehicle values and depreciation data. Along with the top honor, five Subaru models earned awards in their respective segments.

• Subaru Impreza – Best Compact Car

• Subaru WRX – Best Sports Car

• Subaru Forester – Best Compact Utility Vehicle

• Subaru Crosstrek – Best Subcompact Utility Vehicle
• Subaru Outback – Best Midsize Utility Vehicle – 2nd Row Seating
ALG's Residual Value Awards (RVA) recognize vehicles in 26 segments that are forecast to retain the highest percentage of their Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) after a three-year period.

HYUNDAI BRAND HIGHLIGHTS
“Our impressive SUV run continues as we’ve set monthly sales records in eight months this year, a result of our versatile lineup of Tucson, Santa Fe and Santa Fe Sport,” said John Angevine, director, National Sales, Hyundai Motor America. “Year to date, Hyundai SUV sales are up 11 percent, significantly outpacing the industry. Coming off a successful Kona introduction this week at the Los Angeles Auto Show and our commitment to debut eight new or re-engineered SUVs by the year 2020, we are poised to take full advantage of consumer preferences. Not to be lost in the SUV-focused market, Elantra sold more than 19,000 units, the best ever November result for that model.”

During the month, Hyundai made several significant product and technology introductions. This week in Los Angeles, the new Kona made its North American debut. At the LA Auto Show’s technology showcase day, Hyundai announced a partnership with Smartcar to drive innovations in connected-car technology by connecting businesses to Hyundai vehicles with Blue Link. This connection will allow mobile car washing, grocery delivery, and on-demand fuel delivery companies to securely access Hyundai vehicle functions, including the vehicle’s location, remote locking and unlocking and data such as mileage. Earlier in the month, Hyundai made some of its future product strategy known with plans to deliver eight new or re-engineered SUVs by the year 2020. When it comes to safety, the 2017 Ioniq HEV, 2018 Elantra GT and 2018 Santa Fe Sport were all recently named Top Safety Pick+s by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, adding even more Hyundai models that receive one of the highest safety distinctions in the industry.
