Default Fantasy Land on Used Car Prices

I see people asking for outrageous prices on used cars all the time, but I thought this one was hilarious. Nothing wrong with an 03 ES300 (I currently own an 02), but I bought mine nearly 5 years about with 30k miles for $11k. Oh how I wish mine had increased in value!

To be fair I'd rather start at a higher price, then after weeding out the low-ballers accepting something more fair and realistic.

KBB, for a similar vehicle in this condition and mileage, shows about $7300 for a private-party sale.

Depends on the car, but yeah they're high as a kite thinking an 03 ES300 is worth that much. You can get one of the nicest LS430's out there for that much $$$$.

I always have the same reaction when it comes to used 4wd Toyota trucks, these guys are crazy asking $10k for that piece of junk with 200k miles on it. Yet I see it all the time, so I guess people pay it.

To put things in perspective, 2014 Camrys, cpo, were selling in the 14's last year this time, 30k miles. I told my dad these are a great value, and he agreed, but couldn't see himself in a Camry. My coworker bought one, I rode in it, admittedly boring car. His climate control stopped working but was fixed under warranty.

hard to say where there's more scams and snake oil, new or used. i'd say used because there's more variables.

Nothing is outrageous as the prices of last generation Supra Turbo's on the used car market. One of the few cars that have gone up in value and stayed there.

Supply and demand baby. They didn't sell a lot of Mark IV Supras in the US. Nissan 300ZX twin turbo, same year, they sold a lot more of them, but prices on really clean, non-molested ones have been creeping up a bit(still nothing like Supra prices though). NSX is the same way, prices are outrageous. I can kind of see it with that car, it was mid-engined, all-aluminum, and it was A LOT more money new than a Supra, 300ZX 3000GT VR-4, or RX-7.

There are a select number of people who will give more money for a very well preserved one-off Lexus. I am one of those. But I just don't see this particular ES model having any sort of cult following to justify a higher price. It looks beautiful, and it's appreciated what preservation took place, but the market is very limited here. If it were an older IS, it would be much more exclusive, as most older IS's are abused.
