Pole Position
With pretty much every single car in Lexus' lineup is either outdated or outgunned or both, it still sold within 500 units of BMW with most of its lineup refreshed or new. Not a bad showing at all. It can only go up from there as the new models are introduced or "refreshed." I think they are set up to be the top selling brand again in the next year or two. As much as they claim they dont care about being number 1 in sales, at the end of the day they DO care, otherwise there wouldn't be such heavy incentives on all their models.

http://media.mitsubishicars.com/rele...f-sales-growthMitsubishi Motors Reports Its 5th Consecutive Year Of Sales Growth /
January 03, 2018 — CYPRESS, Calif.
- Calendar year 2017 sales close at 103,686 up 7.7 percent over 2016
- December sales of 8,501 are up 15.1 percent over last December
- Outlander Sport posted its best December sales month ever with 3,678 vehicles sold
Mitsubishi's adventurous Outlander Sport posted its best December sales month ever since the launch of the vehicle in 2010 with total December sales of 3,678 up 47.1 percent compared to December 2016. Not far behind, Outlander recorded sales of 3,018 up 22.4 percent over last year. December also marked the start of sales for the much-anticipated Outlander Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV). Featuring a highly efficient 2.0-liter gas engine and two high-performance electric motors, along with Mitsubishi's superior Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC) system, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV delivers SUV capabilities and EV fuel economy.
"2017 was a remarkable year for Mitsubishi as we continued our rebuilding effort and posted another year of sales growth. In just 5 years, Mitsubishi sales have increased nearly 80 percent, and we're doing that with fleet sales that are lower than industry average," said Don Swearingen, executive vice president and chief operating officer, MMNA. "With the launch of the Outlander PHEV late this past month and the all-new Eclipse Cross hitting showrooms in March, the brand is poised to continue its strong momentum into 2018."

Lexus isn't completely apples to apples with Infiniti as it has two cars that compete in the entry level lux category with the Lexus ES which sold 5,047 units. I'm impressed with the A4 sales at near 4k units.

For Toyota, this is the first time I ever saw Toyota Canada offer lease incentives on the new Camry XSE V6, as soon as it was released. They usually wait for the January slump for that, I saw a dealer in Edmonton, even giving cash back incentives on the CAMRY over the Christmas break. WOW oh WOW.

The RAV4 and the Camry saved the year to keep them @ -0.6% of 2016.

I do the monthly comparison of the Q50 vs the IS line as they are RWD platforms
I also include the GS because it is my favorite current Lexus sedan and the Q50 is really slotted somewhere between the IS and the GS.
I am not into FWD so I generally skip those data points.

Toyota must be happy. The RAV4 ended up outselling the Rogue, so Toyota ended up with the best selling non-truck vehicle again. If you consider SUVs a different category from cars, the Camry ended up as the best selling car once again.

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., Jan. 3, 2018 – Propelled by standout months from Elantra (up 9 percent), Santa Fe Sport (up 28 percent) and Tucson (up 34 percent), Hyundai Motor America reported December sales of Hyundai- and Genesis-branded vehicles of 63,594, a 2 percent increase in comparison with December 2016 and the second highest December sales total in company history. Tucson again set an all-time monthly sales record, surpassing 11,000 units for the second consecutive month, while Elantra and Santa Fe Sport achieved their best December totals.
2017 Year End Sales
For the complete year, 685,555 Hyundai and Genesis branded vehicles were sold, a 12 percent decline from the all-time yearly sales record established in 2016. Annual sales were lower due in large part to a concerted effort to decrease fleet sales, which were down 31 percent on the year. Retail sales were down only 5 percent, despite a car-to-SUV mix inverse to the industry.
That mix is improving however, as Hyundai SUV sales set an all-time annual record with nearly 250,000 sold, a 12 percent increase over 2016. SUV sales represented 36 percent of total sales, the highest SUV mix in Hyundai history. The Hyundai Tucson saw the biggest model gain on the year, selling more than 100,000 units for the first time ever, an increase of 28 percent over 2016, while Santa Fe Sport was up 12 percent. Both the Tucson and the Santa Fe family set all-time annual sales records.

“Hyundai and our dealers closed the year strong and we are one of the few companies to achieve a sales increase in December,” said John Angevine, director, National Sales, Hyundai Motor America. “While our run of eight straight years of annual sales growth came to an end, we improved our SUV mix, reduced our fleet sales and have positioned ourselves for a rebound and quality growth in 2018.”
Also during December, seven Hyundai models earned either an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ (Santa Fe, Santa FE Sport) or Top Safety Pick (Ioniq Hybrid, Elantra, Elantra GT, Sonata, Tucson). Hyundai tied for the most total awards in one of the automotive industry’s most recognized and rigorous vehicle tests.
The new year begins quickly for Hyundai with several significant product introductions in January. At the Consumer Electronics Show, Hyundai will introduce its all-new, next-generation fuel cell vehicle during a press conference on Jan. 8. One week later, at the North American International Auto Show, Hyundai will unveil its all-new Veloster and Veloster Turbo. Both press events will be livestreamed on Hyundai’s YouTube channel.

https://www.media.volvocars.com/glob...-sales-in-2017Volvo Cars reports record sales in 2017
Volvo Cars, the premium car maker, reports record sales in 2017, as global sales rose 7.0 per cent compared to 2016 to 571,577 cars, driven by growth in all regions.
Sales of the new XC60 and the 90-series cars were the main drivers, highlighting the effect of Volvo Cars’ in-house developed Scalable Product Architecture, a modular vehicle architecture, in terms of design, technology and brand.
In the Asia Pacific region, sales grew by a strong 20.9 per cent on the back of a record performance in China, Volvo’s largest market, where sales increased 25.8 per cent compared with 2016. Meanwhile sales in the Europe, Middle East and Africa region grew by 3.3 per cent in 2017 compared to 2016, while the Americas region grew by 0.7 per cent.
2017 was an important year for Volvo Cars in many ways. The new XC60, which replaced the company’s best-selling model and the best-selling mid-sized SUV in Europe, premiered at the Geneva Auto Show in March.Volvo Cars also announced that it would place electrification at the core of its future business and stated that every car it launches from 2019 will have an electric motor, marking the end of cars that only have an internal combustion engine.
In a further commitment to electrification, Volvo also launched Polestar, a new stand-alone electrified car brand fully consolidated within the Volvo Car Group.
During the course of the year, Volvo Cars also deepened its partnership with Geely Holding via the creation of a joint venture technology company to provide the economies of scale that will allow them to more rapidly develop next generation electrified vehicle technology. Volvo also and announced it would take a 30 per cent stake in Geely’s new LYNK & CO car brand, based on the two entities’ joint Compact Modular Architecture.
September saw the introduction of the XC40, Volvo’s first offering in the fast growing small SUV segment. Volvo also invented a new model of car access with its ‘Care by Volvo’ subscription service, making having a car as transparent, easy and hassle free as having a phone. A concept introduced with the new XC40.
Volvo Cars continued construction on a new manufacturing plant in South Carolina, its 1st in the United States, and it was announced that the plant would, in addition to the upcoming S60 mid-sized sedan, build the next generation XC90 from 2021. This takes Volvo Cars’ total investment in its US manufacturing operations to over USD 1.1 billion and will raise the total of new jobs created at the Charleston site to nearly 4,000.
Late in the year, Volvo Cars opened up an entirely new market as it signed a framework agreement with Uber to sell tens of thousands of autonomous driving compatible base cars to the ride-hailing company between 2019 and 2021.

Some interesting Honda vs. Toyota 2017 YTD stats for key models. I am surprised that the Highlander is outselling the Pilot almost 2: 1. Not sure why.
Also i would have expected brand new CRV to outsell older Rav4 which doesn't seem to happening either.
Corolla: 308,695
Civic: 377,286
Camry: 387,081
Accord: 322,655
Rav4: 407,594
CRV: 377,895
Highlander: 215,775
Pilot:127,279
