Default Toyota announces new engines, AWD systems and transmissions

Toyota announced a raft of new technologies, all of which will likely debut in Lexus UX and Toyota Corolla/Auris (Europe) this upcoming Geneva show (in 12 days or so).

What new at Toyota:
- New 2.0l petrol engine, downsized 2.5l. 169hp with all the tech like D4S, etc. Might come in new Corolla as well, since they are calling it new Toyota world engine.
The new engine realizes equal or greater power performance while realizing best-in-class fuel economy accomplished through the 2.5-liter Dynamic Force Engine and with Direct Shift-CVT. Dynamic Force Engine 2.0-liter developed as a core engine of Toyota.
- New 250h hybrid engine, again downsized from new Camry Hybrid. 178hp total power.
The new 2.0-liter system implements technologies that allow for a smaller, lighter, and more energy efficient structure. A 2.5-liter system was previously introduced in the redesigned Camry.
- New Direct Shift CVT - with starting planetary gear for better performance at lower speeds + higher ratio at higher. They claim shifts are now faster than competitor DCT.

- New Dynamic Torque Vectoring AWD system that can transfer power between left and right wheels, thus solving that issue with part time awds when one wheel is not touching the ground. They have a demo between old and new system, looks like old is C-HR AWD while new is new Lexus UX.

- New E-Four system with 30% more torque on rear wheels and better integration of all systems during regular driving, cornering.

- New 6sp MT with rev matching on both downshifts and upshifts.

A lot more new engines left to reveal by the end of the year as well as new AWD systems:

Just an FYI, all of this is going into production vehicles this Spring, I assume that would be Lexus UX 200, 250h and 250.

Why do you say "Not for North America"?

If spwolf is correct, and at least some of this new technology (new 2.0-litre engine with new Direct Shift-CVT and Dynamic Torque Vectoring AWD, new 2.0-litre THSII hybrid engine with E-Four 4WD Systems) is introduced on the new UX, it will very likely be coming to North America.

I like the idea of the direct-drive, toothed launch gear in the CVT. That should prevent slippages of the drive belt when starting from a complete stop.

All this new tech and engines - but nothing for the Supra, just more boring CUVs.

The 6mt sounds interesting but sounds like its for FWD setup.

Where are the V8s or full EV powertrains?

Agreed. Drive-belts have long been the weakest link in most CVTs.

Nothing really new about that. Acura's SH-AWD has done that for years, and so did the Subaru Symmetrical AWD systems that used limited-slip-differentials, like my old 2006 Outback.

- New 6sp MT with rev matching on both downshifts and upshifts.
Nothing really new about that, either...except maybe for the upshifts. The Nissan 370Z had a downshift-rev-match system in production a number of years ago (I did a full-review on one).

I think they'll come up with at least two more. One more for the LC F (TT-V8) and other future F cars, and another for the Tundra/Sequoia/Land Cruiser/etc.

If you look at pretty image I posted, it looks like Toyota will introduce 2 V8's this year... I assume one is for LC-F and another for Tundra V8. In any case, image shows 2 new engines above 3.5tt this year.

A lot of this is for NA... from UX250h with E-Four, UX250 with new AWD and 2.0l/Direct Shift CVT combo likely in future Corolla.

This is wonderful news for the ToMoCo family. I’m extremely pleased to hear about the AWD systems. More rear bias and side to side. The UX we’ll know in the coming weeks what powertrains it’ll get. The LF-1 concept is also a candidate for such AWD systems and probably the new 3.5L TT V6. In that picture above with the the 3.5L here are two large engine shilouettes. I’d wager one is the rumored 4.0L TT V8 and the other either another V8 or V6
